Vehicle Description
After many priceless family road trips and day trips for kids sporting events, keeping us dry and warm (with the integrated webasto heater), we are ready to pass the torch on our HIGHLY customized 2001 VW T4 Eurovan MV Westfalia Weekender.
This EV is in very good condition, very reliable and drives great. Clean title in hand, no prior accidents.
Before I get to the massive list of customizations which set this van apart, here are the general PROs of this van:
*Great condition, owned by non-smokers
*Weekender edition: Pop-top, fold-down rear seat makes into a bed, thermal electric cooler under the jump seat, integrated table...
*All of the 2001-2003 came with the latest 2.8l v6 24 valve engines with just over 200hp. These vans accelerate quickly, hold well on the passes, and easily cruise comfortably at 70-80mph across the country.
*Nokian eNTYREs in good condition
*New studless snow/ice tires on wheels included.
*Transmission fully rebuilt at 30k ago including new pinion gear and torque converter (runs shifts flawless). We purchased the van needing a transmission and had the service done.
*External transmission cooler added at time if rebuild
*Fresh starting battery and auxiliary deep cycle battery
*Does not consume any oil
*Timing chains serviced at 90K
*Everything works (power windows, power locks, driving lights, Air conditioning...)
*2" Trailer Hitch receiver
*Full OEM curtain kit including front and rear window covers (in mint condition
*Includes both the side window bug screens
*The seats and arm rests are in perfect condition, neoprene seat covers for the front are included.
*OEM all weather floor mats in the front
Ok, all those things are great and yes, there are a few other nice EV's available with similar original features along those lines making for a great EV...
Here are the custom upgrades/features I can think of that that put this van on the next level:
*HEAT!!! This van has a fully integrated Webasto petrol heater mounted externally in an enclosure below the vehicle and plumbed into the rear heat duct behind the passenger seat. It comes with digital thermostat and timer control. This 2k heater makes more than enough heat for the van even when the top is popped in cool weather. For fuel, it is plumbed to the vehicle's fuel tank and set properly so it cannot drain the fuel tank completely leaving you out of gas. This heater alone is a total game changer; 25 degrees and frozen outside, no problem, keep it warm all night and the timer can bump it up for you in the morning, climb out of bed into the heat.
*3/4" suspension lift, a very comfortable moderate lift. I have 1.25" lift parts as well which I can include if you would like them. We tried both and found the .75" to be the best for us.
*New Bilstein HD shocks, while the van rode nice with the OEM shocks, Bilstein HD are a significantly noticeable improvement when the road conditions get harsh. Example, cruising down to the petrified forest through AZ at 80mph in what felt like the middle of nowhere the road has some long sweeping peaks and dips; with the OEM shocks at 80mph those dips, the van would "boat" nearly if not completely bottoming out the suspension. Keep in mind there were four of us with all our gear, none the less it activated the butterflies in our stomachs. The addition of Bilstein shocks eliminated the boating effect on these types of road conditions.
*External Transmission cooler upgrade kit installed
*Passenger side glovebox/cubby mod. This adds invaluable extra space for the passenger, a must have.
*Slide out drawer in rear trunk (Includes quick access for telescopic ladder, included). See pictures, this was another game changer providing full access to all of the space under the rear seat. Note that I build this to leave about 10" on the front side to access from the cabin of the van, storing the small items you would need while traveling.
*Audio/video: Sony Touchscreen double DIN With Carplay and Integrated backup camera. Kenwood speakers and Kenwood amplifier for front and rear, powered subwoofer.
*Tinted windows providing much needed relief when road tripping in those sun-rich hot states. The tint (30% I think, is in perfect condition and just the right amount to provide relief without obstructing vision even at night time. It also provides some level of privacy.
*Laminate flooring in the back, makes it much easier to keep clean (we are kind of clean freaks...)
*The lights in the rear cabin have been retrofitted with dimmable LEDs while retaining the original light fixturing. Not only are the LED 1/10th the power consumption of the original lamps, the dimming is much appreciated as the originals were too bright for mid-night use.
*Swivel seat installed on front passenger side. This makes a significant improvement to the interior space when parked in camp mode or just hanging out for a bit like at the drive-in restaurant.
*Tinted wind deflectors on the front windows allowing for better circulation while driving or parked and preventing rain from entering.
There's more. Moving toward the outside:
*Rear hatch bug screen so you can leave the rear hatch open while parked and keep the bugs out.
*Custom made magnetic mount bug screen for the side sliding door (another game changer)
*2" hitch receiver with trailer wiring
*Custom aluminum diamond plate locking hitch mount cargo box with integrated trailer lights and swing away hitch mount. This adds an incredible amount of water tight storage!
*Yakima adjustable position roof rack system with Thule cargo box that opens from either side. Locks and keys included for both.
*Telescoping ladder to easily access the roof storage box included and neatly stores in a custom opening in the rear slide out drawer, no need to open the drawer (see pictures).
*Awning, quick and easy to deploy and close, adding valuable shade on those hot days and rain protection on the wet days.
We still love this van, it has been 100% reliable for us and shows not signs of that changing. We are selling this as our other EV buddies have moved on to travel trailers and we now have a truck and decided to try that direction as well.
This is a 2001 VW, if anyone tells you theirs is perfect, well that is quite impressive, or they are leaving something out... Imperfections in our van while not effecting its performance include the ABS/traction control light which does occasionally turn on and then self reset. I have tested the ABS by stabbing the brakes on loose terrain to confirm the Anti lock brakes are still functioning (which they are). I have vagcom and no codes persist indicating what is causing the light. It has been like this for the years we have owned it and remains. The other item worth disclosing is that the heater fan is a bit noisy, not terrible but not silent either, another "feature" we have grown accustom to and no longer notice ourselves but it is there.
That was quite a novel, are you still with me?
Well, we are huge EV enthusiasts who have loved and cared for this vehicle and hope that has been reflected in this lengthy description.
