Vehicle Description
1959 GMC 100 1/2 ton project truck. This is a factory Pontiac V8 automatic fleetside long bed pickup. This was a running, driving truck so all of the pieces are there. The cab has had all of the rust removed with new pillars, steps, floorpans, etc. The under side and firewall have been coated in a urethane truck bed liner.
The front end has been converted to 4wd with a Jeep Dana 30 "Bullet proofed" axle. This axle is stronger than a Dana 44 now. Why go through all of this trouble? These trucks have the same "footprint" as a Dodge Dakota single cab long bed truck, this is the only axle with the correct width. When people set these trucks on newer Chevy frames or run 1960 & up axles the wheels stick out several inches too much on either side. It doesn't look correct. These trucks were designed to have the wheels INSIDE the fenders and that's why you see so many of these trucks on 4x4 frames, so when the tires are sticking out of the fenders it looks "ok", but I preferred to keep it looking correct, regardless of tire size.
The axle has an 8 lug conversion using Dodge 44 steering knuckles and 12.5" brake rotors & calipers on 17" wheels. I was planning on installing a 14 bolt or Dana 70 rear end to complete the 4wd 3/4 ton conversion. Right now the truck has a 12 bolt Chevy truck rear end under it, but I kept all of the original components off of the Dana 30 so you could convert back to a 1/2 ton 5 lug setup if so desired.
In keeping with the original Pontiac powerplant in this truck I have a stock bore 455 block with stock crank and rods, pistons, etc. but I also have Scat forged "H" beam rods, billet 4 bolt main caps, Icon forged pistons, JE rings, ARP bolts, Lunati roller lifters, 5C heads, headers, etc. to build a bullet proof 455.
The trans is a rebuilt (all the heavy duty Red alto fibers, plates, etc.) BOP TH400 with a new Hughes GM 4fuel torque converter, that is attached to a rebuilt Dodge NP241DHD transfer case that is attached to the rebuilt Gear Vendors overdrive unit.
The fenders and doors still need repaired but the doors have brand new wing windows and glass in them. The bed is in good condition with only one area of rust (see pic). New wiring harness, rebuilt hinges, custom 1953 Pontiac dash, shaved door handles with poppers, all brand new heavy duty steering components, etc. There is a lot of time & money into this truck, it would make a great winter project. My loss your gain.
