Of all the high-performance offerings coming out of the factories in 1968, the Plymouth Barracuda Formula S was definitely a force to be reckoned with. Of the 5196 formula S Barracudas built in this year, just 963 with the big block 383 managed to blast their way out of the Mopar camp to wreak havoc on our American streets…What a great time it was for automotive enthusiasts! Sure, our country was mired in turmoil with the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy, not to gloss over the war raging on in Viet Nam…You know, come to think of it, it’s kinda like right now! We’re in political turmoil, random shootings are happening around us, but we have some pretty amazing, cool cars being built as we speak.
To be clear, if you were a car enthusiast back then, and or now, high performance was then, and now…In the air! If you were fortunate enough to come across a Formula S Barracuda back in the day, I would have no doubt it would have left an indelible memory.
This particular Formula S was originally equipped with the mighty 383 big block, and a 4 speed that contributed to the line-up that put Plymouth on the road to High Performance glory. Cars such as these laid the ground for the Hemi ‘Cudas, Road Runners, GTX’s and the like that hit the pinnacle in 1970/71.
This Barracuda Formula S was treated to a frame-off restoration, and as such produced a very fine example of a classic Musclecar that will stand proudly with any other!
Finished in Saddle Brown Poly, or as we called it back in the day “Rootbeer Brown”, I’m telling’ ya, this color is spectacular on this car! Smooth, and clean, as is the undercarriage, the engine compartment and the interior.
Turn the ignition key on the dash and the 383 barks to life displaying it’s strong tones in the form of a performance cam, and wonderful exhaust notes. Push the clutch in, and the Pistol Grip shifter forward, and try to contain your smile as you row through the smooth gears of the Hurst shifted 4 speed. Just a little more accelerator pedal than necessary and you will see two distinctive black marks on the road behind you. I’m sure you wouldn’t do that on purpose, but, well, sometimes it happens, don’t beat yourself up. Just keep and eye on the factory tach mounted in the middle of your gauges.
The point is, the Barracuda Formula S is a slippery fish, and slippery fish can get away, so hang on and enjoy the ride! Beautiful Car!
