This bus is a great project and could be fixed up in a few weekends. Most of the repairs are minor. I quit driving it about 5 years ago and it has sat ever since. I put a fresh battery in her and with fresh gas she fired right up and sounds as good as ever. It has a gas heater (plus an extra for parts) so you can stay toasty when driving around in the winter and a sun roof and louvered windows for the Summer.
The bad news: Last time it was driven the transmission wouldn't shift out of second. Some people told me it just needed an adjustment to the linkage, I don't know. It was smooth up until it wouldn't shift so I assume it isn't major. The second bit of bad news is that the brakes are frozen up from sitting. the interior is in need of love but that's easy. The sunroof cable snapped but it doesn't leak. The driver side window crank needs repairing. Lastly the gas in the tank is 5 years old and it needs to be drained.
The good news: This car is solid, I used it as my daily driver for a couple of years and it gave no indication of trouble. I have crawled around every inch of this car because when I got it it was in sad shape in some hippies blackberry bushes. Any major mechanical issue it had I fixed. The engine runs like a champ as is evidenced by the fact that she started right up with a fresh battery and a shot of starter fluid. I installed louvered side windows from a camper bus I used to own and it really is a nice touch on a hot day. The bus has a sunroof and I have an extra set of cables. Getting to the extras, I am getting out of Volkswagens and so all my extras go with this bus. I have a set of replacement cables for the sunroof (which is broken), an extra gas heater, a set of shocks, and a box of odds and ends including the oil bath air cooler which isn't shown in the pictures. I'm confident that a waxing will restore this bus's body to it's former glory and a good weekend of tinkering will get her back on the road.
