The Clenet motor car was the product of the French born automotive designer Alain Clenet. Founded in Santa Barbara, California in the late 1970s, Clenet endeavored to revive the classic coachbuilding traditions of the Classic Era using modern automotive platforms and technologies. These would be, in the spirit of the classic coachbuilt car, limited edition specially ordered vehicles built with the very finest materials, offering a level of luxury and exclusivity unattainable through the regular automotive market.
Features such as Italian walnut burl dashboards and etched glass accented by Waterford crystal ashtrays brought many Clenet models in at over $100,000. Buyers ranged from Farrah Fawcett, Rod Stewart, former World Boxing Champion Ken Norton, Superbowl Champion Quarterback Jim McMahon, and Sylvester Stallone to King Hassan II of Morocco. Clenets were called "Drive Art" by Automotive Age and the "American Rolls-Royce" by Fortune.
The similarities between the Clenet and the cars of the classic era would go much further than shared motives. Inspiration for the Clth power steering, tilt steering wheel, air conditioning, cruise control, power brakes, and a state of the art AM/FM stereo. Also included was English leather upholstery, lambs wool carpeting, a solid walnut dash, a crystal ashtray and accessories, cut glass wind laces, soft top, as well as a color matched tonneau cover. Danish teakwood accents, hand rubbed acrylic lacquer pant with custom pin striping, a rear mounted spare completed its lengthy selection of options. With less than 30,000 original miles, the car has been preserved in good condition and will undoubtedly continue to draw a great deal of attention where ever it goes. This is a beautiful and rare automobile. It was designed by Alain J.M. Clenet, a graduate of the National Superior School of Design in Paris, and was factory built in Santa Barbara, California as a hand crafted, limited production work of art. The plan called for producing only 250 of the Series 1 cars and that is what was built. This is No 114
