Before Jeeps came all but standard with hard tops, full doors, and claustrophobia; before hill start assist and an increasing percentage of automatic transmissions; before airbags and second row shoulder belts; there was the CJ. It comes from a simpler time when you could fill up your gas tank with the change in your pocket, which was good because it never got any awards for gas mileage. As a new car in the 80's it didn't turn heads or carry bragging rights, but times have changed. This particular example isn't entirely from the 80's. It has quite a few modern upgrades, mechanically and cosmetically. It retains the Dana 30 in the front and the AMC 20 rear end, but it's been regeared to a 4.11 gear ratio to accommodate the larger 33x12.50 all terrains. It still has the centrally located instrument cluster, but it now has digital readouts to include its quarter mile time (a not surprising 25.5 seconds). Someone clearly took their time to build this one the right way. The add-ons like the steel bumpers, winch, suspension, seats, new top, etc. are all name brand parts. That's not to say this is a comfortable mall-parking-lot decorative piece. The steering wheel has to be well managed to stay in one lane, the gears are difficult to find at best, and although the A/C works every bit as well as it did in '81 they didn't work that well in '81. It's got all those weird quirks that make it so lovable.
