Vehicle Description
Deciding to part ways with my 1981 Mercedes Benz 300TD. Here is the quick points (I'll go into detail below)
-1981 300TD; OM617 3.0L 5 cylinder engine. Diesel, Manual, Turbo, RWD, Station wagon.its the combo you want
-Engine was recently refreshed, new gaskets, seals, etc. Gone over top to bottom. I can answer any questions you have on the refresh
-Gray market import, not a euro headlight swapped US model, proper European model with appropriate equipment
-4 Speed manual transmission, fresh Sachs clutch, slave cylinder, and bearings (car was converted several years prior)
-Manual climate control (no weird vacuum stuff to die behind the dash), heat & AC both work great
-Hard to find "Slick-top" (no sunroof to jam open or leak)
-European adjustable headlights to change angle depending on cargo load (commonly sold on SLS equipped cars)
-Freshly serviced & adjusted SLS system, fully operational
-Sanden R134a AC compressor conversion (gets rid of the problem prone GM/Delphi/Delco compressor)
-very clean body, originally a Texas car & has never seen salt, snow, or ice. Small corrosion on a few parts is present but the body itself is very clean
-Brake calipers & hoses have been replaced within the last 2 years, pads still have plenty of life left in them
-All fluids flushed and/or replaced in the last few months
-Engine has zero blow-by & feels very healthy
-Vacuum system appears to be in good working order, the car shuts off like it should
-Original Becker Grand Prix radio has a bluetooth transmitter in it, modern functionality while retaining the OE appearance
-Palmino seats are in decent shape but could benefit from some fresh padding
-Power windows work, windows have some tint that could use addressing, all three wipers work as well
-Original cluster its in KM/KPH not miles or MPH
-Steering linkage has been replaced in the last few years, all feels very tight & sound
-Original 6.5 wide Bundts could use a refinish but are free of bends and go down the road just fine(Falkens have great tread left on them, they are from the last couple years)
-Car fires up on the first try without hesitation, new glow plug relay & fresh glow plugs
-I went through the trouble of even replacing the notoriously expensive engine struts that help dampen vibration
Here's the full story on how the car came to be in my possession.
I bought this car over a year ago needing a motor due to excessive blow by. A friend of mine had bought this car & it had been in Texas most (if not all) of it's life. As you can imagine the body is in great shape sheet metal wise, the paint has lost a lot of its luster, namely due to being in Texas (hot sun & single stage paint is an awful combo). I had the car towed up here in the summer of 2021 & began working on it over the winter. In the process, I went through the donor motor (out of an 85' W126) top to bottom to make sure it was in tip top shape before putting it back in the W123. The process has taken me a while because I have wanted to do everything the right way & not rush it. But I think my race has been run with this car. It's mechanically solid & is ready for the next stage for someone to get the paint looking super pretty.
I figured I would list it locally before going to Bring A Trailer or Cars & Bids later on this year. I have a couple small little jobs I need to finish up in the next week on it but they are pretty minor & won't take me too long (I have to replace a jumper point to get the tac working again, have the car detailed, and put the kick pad back in). As far as "needs" that this car has, I can't really think of any. There are a few items that might benefit from some attention.
-Windshield has a small chip in it
-Window tint needs addressing
-locks function just fine but are a little slow
-paint on the car is tired but a proper cut, polish, and correction would make this car look like million bucks
-the AMG lip on the front is a slightly different shade of blue
-some of the interior wood pieces have veneer that is chipping off
-very small crack starting on the dash
-cruise control is installed at this point in time & should work however I believe the tach needs to work for this to be functional (not 100% sure but all the linkage, components, and vacuum routing is present
-personally I like the steering wheel but it is not OEM, it is a period correct Momo steering wheel that is leather wrapped, it matches the interior very well & is very era correct for the car
I am sure I will think of more details as time passes here but for the moment that's everything I can think of. I can get better pictures here in the next few days but these will have to do for the time being. I have like 2 pictures of the interior handy but I will be doing to top to bottom photo shoot in the next week or two (underside/underbody photos as well)
Looking for get $14,900 or best offer. First come/first serve, probably not looking for trades. I do not need help selling the car. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns you have.
