Vehicle Description
Time to let go of my pride and joy for the past 6 months, my 1981 Mercedes turbo-diesel S-Class. I bought it in the summer as a barely-running project and have since turned it into a road trip ready cruiser. for a brief time it even served as our daily when our main car broke down. They really don't make them like they used to!
I got it up to a good running condition, just got tags for it with fresh title. It's not perfect, so I'll run thru the pros and cons.
Pros:
Freshly rebuilt front suspension (struts, sway bar components, basically everything but the springs)
New interior blower motor
New thermostat
Various other bits in the past year (coolant expansion tank, radiator hoses, sunshade, all liquids)
Previous owner owned a local shop that did a top-to-bottom on the engine, transmission and steering rack so everything runs smoothly. Car starts right up in the single digits! Obviously lugs a bit at that temp due to cold diesel oil but that's just part of the fun. Transmission shifts are abrupt when cold but smoothes out when warmed up.
Comes on snow tires with original w126 wheels (on car)
Comes with full set of 6.5JX1 H2ET21.5 OEM rims, worth around $800-1000 alone. Will need new tires for them though.
Box full of extra parts including brakes and rotors.
Cons:
Heater does not work. I've traced it down to the heater control valve. Repair kit is about $15.
Could use a bit of love for the cluster. Thermostat gauge works, but sometime reads high. Engine temp checked with thermal gun and it always stays cool. Tach gauge goes in and out. Warning lights work but the rest of the gauges don't light up.
Exterior is in OK condition. Great looking from more then 3ft but small little imperfections if you look close. The trunk could use a repaint sometime soon (see second to last picture).
Driver's door has a large tear in the middle (see last picture)
Leaks a little oil. Not enough to be noticeable on the dipstick so haven't taken the time to trace it down.
Rear passenger window regulator needs replacement. Comes with the part. Window help up by a 2x4 in the door as of now, has been fine for the past 1000 miles.
Welcoming all reasonable offers! Mainly want it out of my garage.
