Vehicle Description
his 87 Toyota Truck is something truly difficult to find. Because of their legendary durability, most of these trucks were used as work horses and subsequently destroyed or turned into beat up stump jumpers. Not this one. This truck has been well cared for its entire life and is a beautiful specimen of the breed. It has gone just over 181,000 miles since leaving the showroom floor, which is nothing on these. It is the desirable SR5 spec which had several differences from the base Delux truck. SR5s were equipped with sportier bucket seats, a center console with arm rest, more powerful injected 22RE motor rather than the base carbureted 22R. From the factory, it benefited from optional upgraded alloy wheels, chrome bumpers, and a sliding rear window. It is a factory 4x4 truck with locking front hubs, and the 4wd functions well.
This truck was acquired from its second owner and went through plenty of cosmetic work to make sure it stands out from the crowd. Starting as a solid rust free truck with all its original sheet metal, it received a sympathetic restoration. The exterior was resprayed in the original Silver Metallic (147) and new SR5 decals were applied. The wheels were powdercoated, new bumpers were installed, a new grill was fitted, upgraded H4 headlamps and fog lamps were installed, and very rare new-old-stock 4x4-script mudflaps were fitted. Inside, the truck maintains the original crack-free dash which has the optional inclinometer/altimeter pod fitted. A new carpet kit, floor mats, leather shift boot were installed along with a Kenwood CD/Bluetooth/USB stereo with new speakers to update the audio system. To assure reliable service, 4 new Rancho shocks were fitted, all the fluids and belts were changed, and a new alternator and battery were installed. For usability's sake, the bed was LineX'd and a tow hitch was installed to take advantage of the 3500LB towing capacity. Included are the original tool kit, jack, owner's manual, and factory 1987 Toyota sales brochure. Truly, this truck is ready for any adventure.
These trucks are rapidly reaching a cult status amongst modern Japanese 4x4 enthusiasts, and examples like this are at the top of the wave. Their durability and usability rivals or even exceeds modern expectations, but finding one in good shape like this example is near impossible. Recent Barrett Jackson Auction results have seen prices exceed $25,000.
