Vehicle Description
For sale is a 1987 Volvo 245 DL, 5-speed manual. Very clean inside and out.
The car starts without hesitation in all weather, even after sitting for extended periods. The vehicle drives exceptionally well--smooth and responsive, with no issues from the transmission or clutch.
The body is in good condition and not without some rust (see photos). There is a spot on the bottom of the driver's side wheel arch. There is rust on the inside of bottom of the tailgate, and under the rear of the vehicle between the body and bumper (bumper attachments are in working order). I've tried to document all of this in the photos. Overall this is a fine-looking example of the classic 245 wagon. I believe what rust there is to be a relatively easy repair.
The vehicle comes with service records going back nearly 15 years, to 2005. The records show the timing belt was replaced at 91k miles.
Other than regular oil changes, the only thing I have done to the vehicle is replace the oil separator, a common but frequently-overlooked item on these engines.
Air conditioning works but doesn't blow very cold. It probably just needs to be recharged. The service records indicate a conversion to r-134 refrigerant sometime in the distant past. Mind you the A/C in these vehicles was never very effective even when new, so don't expect much at any point.
The headliner is in great shape. The clock works, but it will fall behind if the vehicle sits for long. Aftermarket radio with CD and aux input. There is an armrest from a vehicle with brown (not tan) interior. Doesn't match but it's better than nothing.
At the time and for years after these vehicles were the safest cars on the road. That said, they do not have anything like the modern safety features present on even low-end late model cars. There is no ABS, no airbags, and nothing even approaching traction control other than your personal skill with the clutch and throttle. These are wonderfully simple, easy-to-work-on cars, and parts are still readily available and and inexpensive. I assume that if you're looking for one of these great cars that you know all of this already.
The vehicle is recently inspected, through 9/20--it needed nothing to pass both safety and emissions.
Included in the sale is a set of 4 studdable snow tires mounted on a set of black rims (not pictured). The Thule rack goes with the car, if you want it. They say that 240s aren't broken in until the dash cracks and the driver's seat tears. This one has both features.
This car has been an absolute joy to own--I have driven it across the state several times with no hassles. It has never let me sit, or refused to start. I grew up with these cars and I have always thought the 240 wagon to be a near perfect design. I am reluctantly selling because I don't have room for it anymore. Clean title.
Will consider trades for interesting machine tools or useful farm & garden items.
