What is the Cadillac Allante?
The Cadillac Allante is a high-performance luxury roadster produced between 1987 and 1993. Cadillac decided to build it - their first ultra-luxurious roadster - to compete with the Jaguar XJS and the Mercedes-Benz SL. They wanted to offer something that appealed to the young drivers looking to get into the European luxury car market.
The small and nimble two-seater wasn’t just another Cadillac. It was an exclusive model that sported a Cadillac chassis and a body built in Italy. It came with all the bells and whistles available in the late 80s and early 90s, and it was powered by a 200 HP 4.5L V8 engine, which was a pretty big deal back then.
It Was Expensive to Produce.
Cadillac enlisted the legendary Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina to build the Allante’s body. Each unit of the body was shipped to the US and then assembled here in the US. Cadillac insiders called the process “the world’s longest assembly line.”
Not only was the Allante expensive to make but it was expensive to buy. A buyer back in the late 80s and early 90s had to fork over $50K-$60K, which is $110K-$133K in today’s dollars, for an Allante. In fact, it was the most expensive car in Cadillac’s lineup during that time.
It’s Rare.
The Allante was around for 6 years, but Cadillac produced only just over 21,000 units. They’d initially wanted to build 6,000 units per year, but they ended up making half as many. What car collector doesn’t want a rare Italian-designed roadster?
