Vehicle Description
This epitome of retro vanning is rough, but solid. It sat for at least 11 years before I got it, but fired right up with some tinkering. Since then I've done the following:
Spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor
Air and fuel filters
Rear wheel cylinders and shoes
Resurfaced rear drums
Replaced axle seals
Changed diff fluid
Changed oil
New battery
This van is fully self-contained, with a shower/toilet, rear and dinette beds, potable and gray water systems, propane stove, and electric refrigerator. Van also features a roof mounted air conditioner. I haven't dug very far into these systems, so I cannot guarantee that they work. Probably safest to assume nothing does. The ceiling is 6'3" in the front half, and 6' in the rear.
The 318 V8 starts with no hassle or tricks, and runs smoothly with no smoke or knocking; I have no reason to doubt that the miles are original. Transmission and brakes operate as they should as well. Notes from the glove compartment say it was getting up to 14mpg, likely while towing a boat. It does currently drive, though due to the condition of the tires I've just taken it around the neighborhood. For anything further than a few miles it would be safest to tow it.
As pictured, the light gray paint is lifting, and surface rust is starting on the hood and passenger door because of that. The chassis has some surface rust too, but absolutely no cancer. This is a big project, likely the best move is to gut the interior, and plan on mechanical issues popping up too-these old rigs can be cantankerous. That said, it's a very solid rig to start with, and has many more adventures ahead of it.
