Vehicle Description
1992 Mazda Miata 1.6L. This car has been incredibly reliable and is running great. Just passed smog. Lived its entire life in California until I brought it out here a few years ago. Entirely rust-free. Salvage title due to a front-end collision at some point in its life. You can see in the photos that the front bumper was repainted. It was minor because it still had the factory radiator when I got it (since replaced). My guess is it was salvaged because one or both of the headlight motors was damaged. I purchased it with aftermarket headlights, but have since gone back to stock 7" with oem motors and brackets. They work great.
Please be advised: There is a Momo steering wheel installed so this car does not have an airbag. I do not have the original wheel. All the wiring is there, so it could be returned to stock with an airbag. Parts are available to do so.
I am happy to put this car up on jack stands for inspection underneath. I cannot find any damage from the accident other than the repainted bumper and a slightly misaligned hood (also visible in the photos). The drivetrain is fully stock other than the aftermarket air filter. It has the stock plenum, so you would only need the factory airbox to get back to stock. Has a factory manual steering rack and A/C. Originally came with power steering. I am selling all of the power steering assembly (rack, pump, brackets, etc) separately-can be included for $200.
Everything mechanical has been addressed. Where it's at now is that it could use some cosmetic work both inside and out, but there are no driveability issues. Would make a great daily driver, weekend toy, or track build (though I think it's a little too nice to do that). This a very honest car (daily driver condition but not a time capsule collectible by any means). Has never given me a single issue.
Maintenance/Repairs since 2020:
-Valve stem seals-should be good for another 10+ years now
-Timing belt, accessory belts, water pump, cam seals, idler/tensioner pulleys, rebuilt lifters, thermostat, etc. Did everything that could possibly need service or replacement since I was in there for the valve stem seals.
-New radiator, every single hose, coolant flush
-New Flying Miata springs with New Bilstein shocks (that came on the R)-has a sporty ride but not harsh at all. Still has full suspension travel
-Every single bushing replaced (factory style rubber-no squeaks or harshness of polyerethane)
-Mazda competition engine and differential mounts
-Rebuilt shifter/new bushing
-All new fluids: brakes, coolant, motor oil (last done about 3 months ago), diff fluid, transmission, clutch
-New master cylinders (brake and clutch)
-New brake lines, calipers, pads, rotors (brembo-factory style)
-New tires in 2020
-New plugs and wires (NGK)
-New MAF (cardone) and O2 sensor (Bosch)
-New seals on the CAS and all engine peripheral modules
The list goes on. This was a true labor of love project. Feel free to ask questions. If it rotates or moves it has been rebuilt or replaced. The only thing I haven't touched is the bottom end of the engine, which is in outstanding condition. We can boroscope the cylinders if you want to see inside. All head work was done with the head on, so it's still on the factory head gasket. Very common for those to last the life of the car on these engines. It was one of those if it ain't broke, don't fix it situations.
Gauges are Revlimiter (have the original faces) with chrome rings from moss miata. A/C control also has a Revlimiter face and chrome knobs/sliders. Originals will be included with sale. I got the car without a radio, so it has a ford escort radio in it at the moment (couldn't find a factory miata radio when I was assembling it. New gauge cluster hood. Dash is in great shape. Center console is the IL Motorsport version with cup holders and the armrest pad.
Areas of concern:
-Seats are torn and in so-so shape. Definitely useable, but it could use new seats. (I have a pair of NB surfboard seats I could sell with the car for an additional $200, but they need to be upholstered)
-Paint is not bad but not perfect. May just need a good buff (single-stage paint). That's not in my wheelhouse so I left it alone as I didn't want to risk burning through the paint.
-Body panal alignemnt. The headlights look off, but that's just that the hood isn't in perfect alignment. Rear end panels are fine
That's really it. Again, mechanically it is as close to new as it gets. Everything was addressed down to every aging rubber component. Body is rust free. Top isn't leaking but it definitely shows it's age. Rear window is a bit foggy. Ready to be cosmetically spruced up, modded to your liking, and driven to it's limit.
Sadly it's time to sell because I don't have time to drive it like it deserves. It was meant to be a daily driver, but I'm driving for work duties and the cabin is too small for my work needs. Including an excellent service manual (the enthusiast's workshop manual) and a box of spare parts/fluids.
Not looking for any trades, but I may consider a late 80s to very early 2000s Japanese wagon or van with a manual transmission.
Let me know if you have any questions. Happy car hunting!
