This nearly 30-Year-Old beauty was born in October of 1992. End of the Road by Boyz II Men, the No 1 song for 12 weeks running was about to be supplanted by The Heights, How Do You Talk to an Angel. My how time flies!
This Poppy Red American Icon was about to begin a journey that would take her around the world. She would tread in the tire tracks of her forebearers. She was ordered from the Post Exchange and forwarded on to Japan where she spent her first couple of years amongst funny little Japanese econoboxes. From there she was packed into another cargo ship and traversed one the great canals, was it the Suez or Panama? I suspect it was the Suez, but only Poppy knows for sure. Her next duty station, the old world! She enjoyed a brief romance with Europe, based in Spain. I’d like to think she ran off for long weekends in Italy, perhaps even visiting her cousins on the Renault side of the family in France. Alas, Poppy is mum on her European adventures. A lady doesn’t kiss and tell. From there it was a return to her country of birth. I hope she enjoyed Y2K and partied like it was 1999! I sure did! We have no idea what she did in during the ought’s and early teens. Likely relegated to grocery duty and a soul-sucking commute to the Pentagon each weekday. When we found her, she’d been enjoying beach duty for a young family in Arlington that had recently outgrown her. We caught up on her deferred maintenance and shared thousands of careless and trouble-free miles of adventure.
Then COVID. She was idle during quarantine until we moved out of Arlington to Front Royal. She came with us, but aside from an occasional trip to Lowes or the dump she never managed to find her stride out here. She spends most of her time in the back yard, perched on her concrete pad. She’s wasting away and it just isn’t fair. There’s some life left in this old girl, and we want her to have the opportunity to make memories with someone who will cherish her. She’s not ready for the scrap yard but without a little TLC we fear it won’t be long.
We replaced her entire cooling system as a precautionary measure when we got her. She recently got new leaf springs and a driver side hub & bearing. She needs a transmission mount. Her pax side floor is succumbing to rust, as are her lower quarters and rockers. Her speedometer works on occasion. She’s got a blemish here and there, nothing more than proof of a life well lived. The previous owner installed a receiver under the front bumper, and a budget head unit; other than that, she’s remarkably unmolested and original.
She deserves a full restoration; there just aren’t many like her. We have no doubt she’s got miles to go, and for the right owner, she will have the opportunity to age gracefully!
