1996 Pontiac Grand Prix 4-door, 76,946 miles.
3100 (3.1 litre) fuel injected V6
THIS IS A CHICAGO CAR!
("Danger Will Robinson!")
It has been exposed to 20 years of long, cold winters including ROAD SALT and SNOW, so the body AND UNDERBODY are rusty and a significant factor in this vehicle's value.
As you can probably see from the photos, both sides of the car were damaged from the previous owner's attempts to park it in their garage. The previous owner of this vehicle lost their ability to drive in about 2012.
The car sat in a damp, unheated garage for two years. ALL of the brake lines had rusted through and had to be replaced.
I obtained the vehicle in 2014, replaced the battery and drove it from Chicago to Texas. I immediately replaced all four brake calipers, rotors, and brake pads. The brakes are now fine. (ABS light is on. I believe it's due to a wheel sensor or wiring to a wheel sensor.) The water pump and radiator hoses have also been replaced.
In 2016, the exhaust system developed a leak, and the car has not been driven since then. (This car is VERY low-slung -typical Pontiac- and the exhaust system hit a board on my bridge and caused the problem.) The leak -appears- to be a small crack by the downstream O2 sensor. I can't be sure of this. The exhaust sounds a bit throaty now. I have a piece of exhaust pipe, a new O2 sensor, and the O2 sensor fitting that can be used to repair the exhaust leak. Included with the vehicle.
As the car sat, mice or rats have gotten under the hood and chewed sone wiring. Some spark plug wires had to be replaced. The rest of the set of wires is included. Some wires behind the headlights need to repaired. Until this is done, the headlights and turn signals should be considered not working.
Over the past 5 years of sitting, the car has periodically been started and run. It starts up immediately - but the battery has gone bad. It will start fine after being charged overnight, but will lose its charge in just a few hours. It will need to be replaced.
Once the rusting had starting, not even bringing it to Texas could stop it. The rest of the lines under the car - fuel, emissions, transmission, etc - should not be trusted. Likewise for the fuel tank. It is even possible that rust has compromised the structural integrity of the unibody construction.
The power steering has a leak in the rack & pinion.
The antifreeze had some engine oil in it in 2014. It was flushed, hoses & radiator cap replaced, and new antifreeze installed. A General Motors "Supplemental Cooling System Sealer" was added per factory technical service bulletin and it seems to have corrected the problem. This is most likeky due to a common problem with the intake manifold gaskets on these engines. There was never any antifreeze in the engine oil.
The air conditioning has a leak and does not work. Previously, adding R134A refrigerant got it going again, but it should be checked for leaks and properly repaired. Also, sitting outside in Texas heat has caused the heat and A/C control knobs to break. They will need to be replaced.
The Texas heat has also caused the inside rearview mirror to fall off the windshield.
Occasionally, the "Low Coolant" light will flash, but this a false alarm. The coolant level has been checked and double-checked. The car does not leak antifreeze.
The "Check Engine" light is NOT on.
Summary:
It starts and runs when the battery is charged.
Needs a new battery.
Drives, steers, and stops OK.
Rusty body and underbody.
Headlight & turn signal wiring need repair.
Exhaust leak needs repair.
A/C needs recharging (at least)
Power steering leak.
Tires are good. Space-Saver spare has never been on the ground.
While this car was actively being driven, it received regular oil changes and maintenance. (Believe it or not)
Though this car can -probably- be driven, I would not want to drive it very far. It should be driven directly to a place where it can be thoroughly checked out and repaired. I did drive it up and down my long driveway, but I wouldn't take it on the road without an option for getting it home in case it quit on me.
I suggest that you tow it rather than drive it.
Clean title in my name in hand.
Seller will supply a bill of sale
Two sets of keys included.
Miscellaneous spare bulbs, fuses, and serpentine belts included.
I've listed this car as "salvage" because CL doesn't have a "poor" category, and I dont think I could call this car "fair" with a clean conscience. A skilled mechanic with enough ambition could fix this car up and have a nice driver. One could also take this engine, trans, and tires and give new life to a run-out Texas car with a good body. The interior of this car is actually in pretty good shape.
Since you've been so good to read this tale of woe, I'll include a two-volume set of original factory GM manuals with the car The manuals cover not only this model, but the Chevy Lumina and Monte Carlo, Olds Cutlass, and Buick Regal.
Please come prepared to tow or trailer this car. I'd feel better than if you tried to drive it home.
