The '96 2.2L Manual Trans Tour Wagon is one of the most rare and sought after models put out by Subaru to date. This was the first year of the 'true Outback' series and the first (and last) year for the now-legendary 2.2L engine. The 2.2 was not only limited to this one year of production but was also only available in the manual transmission. Coming up on 30 years since their production year, these cars are starting to hit the 400 and 500k mile marks and still on the road running strong. The 2.5L alternative and replacement has had a number of problems. most notably blown head gaskets, knock sensor issues, torche binds and more.
Not to say these wagons are indestructible or you wont find them in a junk yard here and there. Treat any car like shit & it wont be long before it becomes a pile of it. The cars that last the extra 200-300k miles are ones that have been serviced regularly and had preventative upkeep and replacements as opposed to waiting until parts are beat down and shot out. Im the third owner of this Outback and have a full folder of paperwork and service records for all maintenance and upkeep of the car for the past 10 to 15 years passed along from the previous two owners. In the past decade the car has had nearly $8000 invested into it. I say 'invested' because the majority of the servicing and replacements were done preventatively and I was given the original parts (still in working order) as replacements. This includes the original transmission with 130k miles on it that was replaced by a 40k mile transmission a couple years back. Apparently the clutch was nearing the end of its life and, knowing the trans had to be pulled for the clutch replacement anyhow, the previous owner searched for and found a great deal on an almost new trans and had them swap it out as well. I have the original transmission in storage up in Oregon and could figure out a way to get that to you as well.
This car has been nothing but good to us. We needed something that we could rely on to get wherever we needed to go without having to worry about some headache of a new problem or new noise or limitation that had been learned to live with like so many cars we've owned in the past (overheating, squealing brakes, clunky shifting, power windows/locks not working, damaged body, gross interior, no radio, shitty speakers, turn signals not working, windshield wipers not working, cracked windshield, etc etc etc). I needed a vehicle that I could work on myself, take on a road trip at any minute, got great gas mileage, an engine and transmission that were built to go the distance, with plenty of cargo room/roof rack ready for traveling and something with AWD so that snow or mud weren't the end of the line. We did our research and this make and model had everything we needed and more so I jumped on the first opportunity I got. We have had no real issues with it and have kept up on maintenance and servicing. If you treat this car well, it will continue to return the favor.

26 mpg average!
Heated seats, Cold AC/ Hot hot heat, cruise control works great, back seats fold down flat for impressive amount of cargo space or crash pad.
Also has a custom low-profile tow package with wiring harness - all professionally installed and done right. Towed a Zodiac-style boat on a small EZ loader trailer once and it did great. Thats all the towing its done.
This is an opportunity for rare Subaru wagon in great shape that is ready to go cross country today.
Price is pretty firm. Looking for cash. Possible trade for a Toyota Dolphin or similar style camper in good condition but that's about it.
Can deliver as far as Oregon or the bay for a decent delivery fee. Otherwise, contact me and we can work out a time and place that's convenient for you to take a look and give it a test drive.
