Vehicle Description
I'm selling my gold 2001 Mercury Cougar with 114k miles. It has a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine with a manual transmission. It's a great little car, and runs well. I was driving it 5+ times/week until the clutch started throwing fits in reverse two weeks ago. The title is clean. The current tags expire this month so I went ahead and paid to renew the registration last week as planned non-op. Asking $1000. Serious offers considered.
Good:
-Runs smooth, no engine problems, great acceleration
-Incredible cargo space for a 2 door coupe - the back seats even fold flat for more space if needed!
-Racing style seats
-Power locks, power windows and power side mirrors all work
-Immobilizer: uses a chip in the key to allow the engine to start
-Interactive system information: Outside temperature, trip meter, miles of gas left, average speed and gas mileage (can be reset). There is also a diagnostics mode for it that you can enter when starting the car which gives you lots more information, including a digital speedometer and exact engine temperature readings.
-In the last 15,000 miles I've replaced:
*Tires and wheels (changed from aftermarket 18" to stock 15" steel - the old wheels and the spacer kit are included with the car)
*Spark Plugs
*Coolant & Thermostat
*Fuel filter
*Air filter
*Cabin air filter
*Rear hatch support lifts
*Headlight bulbs
*Windshield wipers
-It also has a relatively new timing belt and battery (20,000-25,000 miles)
Not so good:
-The clutch needs to be replaced. Reverse gear is a particular issue, but also has issues in other gears. I highly recommend planning on towing it to where you'll work on it.
-Aftermarket exhaust is too loud for my tastes, but may be perfect for yours!
-The suspension chirps/squeaks a bit. The front passenger strut leaks fluid. I wouldn't be surprised if the ball joint or tie rod end there also needed to be replaced.
-The aftermarket CD player is stuck in Demo Mode. The radio and aux inputs have worked well for me, and I can change all of the settings etc. except what it displays when you aren't actively using the menu. My wife tried the CD player once and said it didn't work. I don't listen to CDs, so I haven't investigated this further. The previous owner gave me two identical face plates for it.
-Cosmetic issues include small dents, chipped paint and some weatherstripping not sitting right around passenger headlamp as seen in the photos. Grasshopper included free of charge!
-Missing the front passenger plastic wheel cover.
