Vehicle Description
Affectionately dubbed as William, our 2002 Freightliner Sprinter camper van is for sale. Hailing
from Indiana, where it was originally a work van (Williams Heating and Cooling- which is still
faintly visible on the side), we drove it across the country and turned it into our home on
wheels. It was the beginning of many adventures.
William is an older van that has some “character.” This write-up is an attempt to paint a true
picture of the van. We’ve never been stranded or needed a tow truck; however, being
comfortable “tinkering” with this vehicle is probably helpful.
The van:
- 2002 Freightliner Sprinter
- 242,500 miles
- It has been parked the last couple of years and used as our “spare” bedroom but still
fires up first try
- T1N generation (2002-2006)
- 140” wheelbase, short top
The build:
- This is a home build completed in 2012. It doesn’t look pro, but has always worked.
- Propane stove
- Propex HS2211 heater (propane operated)
- 14 gallon water tank (external fill) with foot pump to faucet.
- Convertible bed/futon that leaves lots of floor space when folded into couch mode
- Passenger side swivel
- 140 amp hour battery housed under the passenger seat
- 100 watt solar panel
- Ceiling fan
- Safe for valuables
- Dimmable house lights, and exterior light by sliding door
The quirks:
- Sliding door can be a pain to close, especially in cold weather. We’ve always just dealt
with this, but it is likely fixable with a new latch or rollers.
- Air conditioning does not work
- Windshield is cracked
- Brakes are a bit weak compared to a new car. Les Schwab diagnosed this and replaced
the rear calipers, but it made no difference. It may be the brake booster?
- Torque converter is finicky. When the van is cold trying to drive out of a parking spot on
a steep incline can be difficult. The engine will just rev but the torque converter will
hesitate to supply enough power.
- The RPMs oscillate a bit until the engine is warm. New fuel filter? It has never been a
problem.
- The exhaust can be quite stinky at times, particularly when you have just started it and
are cruising at low speeds. It’s a pre-DEF van.
- When you get a check engine light, this van uses Mercedes specific diagnostics which
most entry level OBD2 scanners cannot communicate with. We used the Autel Maxidiag
MD802 which was able to read/erase codes. We would highly recommend having a
similar device if you plan to work on the vehicle yourself.
We love this van and all the quirks, character, and grunge it comes with. We hope this van will
find the right person, because we believe it still has many adventures and years ahead of it.
Please check out the photos and video!
