Vehicle Description
The Jeep is running and I'm still driving it as my commuter but the engine is making a knocking noise. Parts/labor are not cheap for the motor so I recommend only those who know what they are getting into consider buying this. I am hoping there is a diesel mechanic enthusiast out there that can bring this Jeep back to life. Otherwise, I'm trading it in and it'll probably just become scrap.

The Ugly:
Jeep sat for over a year waiting on me to replace fuel pump. Before parking it, it was “rolling coal” upon acceleration which it hadn’t done prior in its life. It also had a lag in stepping on the pedal and actually accelerating and additionally—if not at full throttle—it had flat acceleration from 45 to about 60 mph. I thought it was all due to the fuel pump and finally replaced it. Upon doing so, started driving it again but the performance wasn’t much different.
I commute 80 miles round trip every day and work long hours at times so I just kept driving it as-is for a few weeks. Unfortunately the low pressure oil warning light came on and then very quickly (within seconds) the engine made a loud clacking noise and died. I pulled over and had it towed. The shop determined that the oil pan had sludge (I did check the oil level just the day before and it was on the high end of the stick), which really surprised me because I always used synthetic. They taught me something I didn’t know … that due to the high pressure in the combustion chamber, diesel fuel blows past the cylinder rings into the crankcase so the fuel gelling with the oil must’ve been the culprit. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me being in Florida where it doesn’t seem diesel would ever gel but anyway … they flushed it out and the motor runs the same but makes a loud “clacking” sound. Really sounds like a tractor now. Mechanic thinks it’s “diesel knocking” which my research indicates means there’s a difference in time between the fuel injection and the compression/ignition. Could also obviously be mechanical contact. It’s unfortunately beyond my expertise to fix and I simply need to get a new vehicle. It is drive-able.
I’d love for this to go to an enthusiast who knows how fun this turbo diesel is in the relatively lightweight Liberty. I had a long term goal of one day putting the motor in a CJ or maybe TJ. That would be a vehicle that would appreciate in value. So, it’s a “mechanic’s special” or it’s a good parts donor for a current CRD owner or at my asking price, could simply be parted-out on the internet and a decent profit made.
Here's a video of it running. The knock is pretty obvious.
