Before we owned the vehicle, due to the rear door weather stripping being misaligned, water got into the rear of the vehicle during a heavy rain and the rear SAM module got wet. I pulled it out and dried it off but it continues to have issues. It needs to be replaced. Since then it has had the following issues:
1. Fuel gauge reads full when full, and 1/2 full when empty.
2. Turbo is not working. You can drive it without the turbo however 0 to 40 is slow.
3. After you start the vehicle, it will run forever, unless you shut it off when the engine it up to normal operating temp. You will then need to wait a while (perhaps an hour) to restart it. If you shut off before the engine is up to temp (i.e. 5 to 10 min) it will start back up fine.
When you scan for codes there is a code indicating that the fuel pressure is low. I had the low pressure fuel pump (in the tank) replaced but that did not help. In retrospect (and after doing some more research) it is most likely the SAM module that is bad. I do not have time to work on it anymore so selling as-is.
History:
- We believe the car was originally owned by an older woman. About 10 years ago she drove the front end into some water causing engine damage. Water did not get inside. She took it to certified Mercedes repair shop here in town. The owner of that repair shop purchased it from her and then replaced the engine himself. He used it for his personal vehicle for many years and then sold it to us.
- Within a week the transmition went out. We spent nearly $5k on a fully rebuilt trans.
- Last the vehicle had damaged (driving over a speed bump at ~45 mph) many of the front end components (hence the $4500 bills for front end repairs). When this happened it triggered a safety feature in the vehicle that set off all the seat belt tensioners, so the two front seatbelts were replaced. One of the three rear belts still works (middle belt), two rear belts still needs replacement. No airbags went off. As a result of the two bad seatbelts in the rear, the ABS light is stuck on. Frame / body / alignment is straight.
This vehicle would be great for someone that has time and ability to replace the SAM module. Alternatively, the diesel engine which is used in many Jeeps, Chryslers and Mercedes is valuable, as well is the new transmition. Just those components are worth more that I'm asking. No low ball offers please. This is already the cheapest ML320 CDI for sale in the United States.
