Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is the cleanest burning transportation fuel on the market today. CNG burns cleaner than petroleum based products because of its lower carbon content. CNG produces the fewest emissions of all other fuels and contains significantly less pollutants than gasoline. Natural gas produces an equal amount of energy as a gallon of gasoline. Therefore it gets the exact same gas mileage however, natural gas costs significantly less than gasoline and diesel fuel. Even though power, acceleration, and cruising speed of compressed natural gas buses are similar to their gasoline and diesel counterparts, CNG bus mileage per tank is generally less because natural gas is less dense than gasoline or diesel. To provide adequate driving range, CNG is stored onboard a vehicle in cylinders at a pressure of 3,000 to 3,600 pounds per square inch. Extra natural gas storage tanks can help increase range for longer trips.

*** How Does a CNG Engine Works?

The engine functions the same way as a gasoline engine. The fuel-air mixture is compressed and ignited by a spark plug. The natural gas is stored in a fuel tank, or cylinder, typically at the back of the vehicle. A CNG fuel system transfers high-pressure natural gas from the fuel tank to the engine.
