Vehicle Description
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Fort Lauderdale event, 29 - 30 March 2019. Estimate: $220,000 - $250,000 Handcrafted AMG 621-hp, 6.0-liter V-12 Biturbo engine Finished in Obsidian Black with designo Black Nappa leather Sigle-owner example with less than 2,700 miles from new 65 built worldwide; one of only 30 destined for the U.S. market Over its 40-year run, the Mercedes-Benz Gelndewagen evolved from military-specification four-wheeler to tony high-performance beast. Initially developed in response to a request by the Shah of Iran for use in his armed forces, the G-Wagen was later reworked in civilian configuration. Mercedes kept the boxy off-roader from the U.S. market but allowed an independent importer in New Mexico to market the vehicle until 2002. At that time, Mercedes took over distribution and the G-Class, as its name was integrated into the automaker's lineup, grew into a range of V-8- and eventually V-12-powered super SUVs. AMG versions quickly became more popular with their stiffened suspensions, taller wheels, sporty tires, and ferocious powertrains. The 500-horsepower G 55 AMG was the first out of the gate in 2007 and it paved the way for Mercedes to shoehorn its legendary V-12 underhood to create the G 65 AMG in 2012. Offered in limited numbers, the G65 featured a twin-turbo V-12 rated at 621 hp teamed to a 7-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive. Even though it was designed for high-speed pavement use, Mercedes did not skimp on the G 65's off-road ability. A trio of switches high on the dashboard activated its three locking differentials and it retained the rugged coil-sprung solid axle suspension design first employed in 1979. Before Mercedes unveiled the first full remake of the G-Class in 2018, the automaker released a highly limited G 65 'Final Edition' in late 2017. Just 65 were earmarked globally, with only 30 delivered to the U.S. The 'Final Edition' included bronze exterior accents on its 21-in. alloy wheels backed by high-performance brakes, Panamera-style grille surround, mirror caps, and spare wheel. Inside, the look was repeated with bronze stitching on its diamond-pattern designo Black Nappa leather upholstery and carbon fiber-patterned seat bolsters. This G 65 'Final Edition' on offer was sold new through Mercedes-Benz of Gilbert, Arizona, and has been driven just 2,700 miles. The car is accompanied by a copy of the window sticker.
