Vehicle Description
99 BMW 740iL e38 - Big German luxury vehicle, Titan silver with gray leather interior. 4.4L V8 with Steptronic 5 speed automatic. Loaded: Power steering, power brakes, power tilt/telescope wheel, power windows, power mirrors, power moonroof with shade, auto dimming rear view mirror, Automatic climate control with cold AC and independent control for each side of the front and rear passengers, cruise control, factory Xenon headlights, power rear sunshade, manual shades for the rear passengers, reverse camera. AM/FM/USB/Bluetooth. Rare European center console armrest. 14 way adjustable Active front seats - they gently rock you from side to side to keep you from getting sore, but it's so subtle you don't even notice after a couple of minutes, backrest both reclines and tilts in the middle for maximum comfort. 19" wheels from a E65 750 with 2 new front tires. Blackout grill and shadow corner lights. One of the largest rear seats imaginable in a sedan - I'm 6'3" and fit back there in comfort with my knees nowhere near the front seat, even with a person as big as me driving. Rear foot rests. BMW floor mats recently changed. Storage compartment everywhere. Holds 4 golf bags in trunk. Owners manual, first aid kit and tools in trunk are with the car.
Super nice riding vehicle, I mainly use it for long trips where it just devours the highway while you sit in comfort. It's been to Florida, Ohio, New England (to the top of Mt Washington!) Gets over 20 mpg while going ~80 mph. Why am I selling it? I have too many cars and missed my e36 BMW convertible, so I bought an e46 vert and this BMW has to go.
What I've done to it: Engine replaced 2 years ago, new one had 110k miles when I bought it. Transmission replaced last year. Both are from 540 Sport BMWs (but not the same one.) When I replaced the transmission I installed a Steptronic shifter and transmission controller which allows you to manually shift the gears with a quick bump up or down. Used all genuine BMW parts. Cooling system completely refurbished: new hoses, water pump, thermostat, valley gasket, etc. Front suspension completely overhauled, Bilstein touring (B4) shocks all the way around. No check engine light, no ABS light (rare for these cars.) What's different about this e38 740 as compared to most you see is this one wasn't neglected by me. I've owned it for about 5 years and steadily improved it.
What's wrong with it? There are a couple of issues, to be expected for a car of this age and mileage. First the Airbag light is on. I've scanned it and it's the seat buckle connections on both sides. This doesn't keep the airbags from firing. There's a slight shimmy around 50 mph for the first couple of miles until the tires warm up. There's a bit of startup clatter typical of BMW V8's on a cold start. Windshield has a few small cracks, they were there when I bought the car and haven't increased in size at all, they don't interfere with your view of the road and cause no inspection problems. The front cupholder doesn't work (but the rear one does!) The heat doesn't work on the seats. The glovebox latch handle is broken (but there's an easy way to open it.) Seats show a bit of wear, but no rips and they don't look bad at all. Some minor scratches and dings on body, it's a driver, not perfect. It was involved in a minor fender bender 3 years ago, drivers front fender and bumper were replaced but the paint doesn't quite match depending on light and the angle you look at it. Rear bumper is probably the worst aspect body wise.
The stereo: The navigation computer DVD drive is stuck on, it drains the battery if you leave it plugged in. So I removed it and installed a video module which allows the use of the screen up front, but no navigation (it's terrible anyway, it's 90's technology, you're better off with your phone or a Garmin unit.) I removed the CD changer from the trunk and replaced it with a Mediabridge module with allows you to use USB, Bluetooth and an aux input. You can also hook up a SiriusXM satellite radio receiver to it (I had this installed, but moved it to another vehicle.) Handfree mic is installed in the car. I can give you the nav unit and the CD changer if you want them (you can replace the drive in the nav computer if you like.) The speakers in the factory 'subwoofer' in the rear deck are blown, so I just unplugged it.
