UPDATE: Driver's side chain tensioner has been replaced and is now completely quiet, no more faint ticking. The entire front bumper, core support, etc of the car had to come off for this job and while I was in there I noticed the Gates timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys and water pump are brand new. Score! Most shops charge $2,500 for this job so this really is a wonderful deal considering this maintenance has now been taken care of.
The machine: This specific widebody 2001 C5 is an exceptionally clean and cared for example of any used 4.2 A6 you will find for sale today. The amplified BOSE sound system is a remarkable experience, the interior is light gray and is very clean 9/10. The black power leather seats are very soft and supple yet very supportive. The carpet, door panels and headliner all all very clean without major tears, rips or large stains. The rear side windows have retractable manual sun shades and the back window has an automatic sun shade. All “wood grain” door/dash inserts and center console has been carefully wrapped in brushed stainless steel high quality VIVID brand vinyl to really update the look of this machine and to match the exterior aggressive nature of the OEM lower door blades and flared widebody fenders.
Exterior: The light silver metallic paint is a solid 8.5/10 as far as condition and shine. Overall it is extremely shiny, smooth and clean. There are a few scuffs and chips on the front bumper as to be expected, two small spots on the roof and a recess from a license plate screw in the rear bumper however aside from these small issues there are no large dents or blemishes anywhere at all. As shown there is one small dent on the driver’s front flared bubble fender but the plastic inner wheel splash guard could be removed and it could easily be hammered out with a dolly in minutes. I should also mention to help break up the bulbous “Beluga whale” look of this rear end I have spend countless hours cutting, joining, modifying and shaping a C6 A6 rear spoiler to fit this C5 trunk. I will see if I can finish sand and primer/sealer before it is sold. It will need to be painted base/clear silver and mounted with 3M thin double sided tape. A facelift gloss black C5 license plate holder has been installed and the OEM gray/smoke unit is included as well. Both 8,000k HID Xenon bulbs are bright and both composite headlights have been buffed and polished though the corner marker lights have been tinted. I have also made a badgeless honeycomb grill which is in place now but if you prefer the OEM grill with the four rings and QUATTRO badge this is included in the trunk along with an extra air filter, synthetic motor oil, power steering fluid and tensioner. OEM struts are also there.
A brand new front passenger outer axle boot just recently was installed. All 4 calipers have been coated with high temp bright red paint and the fronts have custom AUDI SPORT silver graphics I made on my vinyl plotter. As all the rotors have some surface rust and a very slight vibration when braking this may well clear up over time but if not they are nowhere near the wear limit and can be turned town at any auto parts store or shop for a small fee then reinstalled.
Mechanical: The AWM code 310 horsepower all aluminum 4.2 liter 40 valve engine is in outstanding shape for the 257,000 miles on it. There is absolutely ZERO oil sludge on the internals, I have the video and photos to prove they are absolutely spotless inside. There is no check engine light CEL, no misfires and it runs very smooth. This engine fires right up and roars like a lion through the dual matching straight through stainless steel mufflers. . This was the last of the front timing belt V8 engines before the dreaded timing chain nightmare that replaced it which requires an extremely expensive engine out service to change the timing chains and/or guides on the back of the engine block. This engine has no such problems, please consider this when looking at B6 and newer platform Audis at the same price point. Both OEM boat anchor heavy “lima bean” mufflers have been recently replaced and the system upstream is entirely stock OEM with both catalytic converters and resonators in place. The 5HP24 automatic transmission shifts smooth and does not leak at all.
Wheels: 19” rotor wheels are currently mounted with dual locking lugs bolts. Staggered near new tires are CONTINENTAL CONTI SPORT CONTACT 245/35/ZR19 on front and DELINTE THUNDER D7 265/30/ZR19 on rear and have lots of deep tread left. Five matching factory 17” FAT FIVE wheels with good tires are included in the trunk for winter use so the gorgeous rotor wheels don’t get damaged with salt. I believe if someone were to install 20mm front spacers and 30mm rear spacers they would fill out these flared fenders perfectly. If interested I would consider selling this machine with my staggered 18x8.5 and 18x10 Porsche Turbo Twist wheels to really fill out the fenders however I do not currently have any 5x130 adapters so you would need to transport with the OEM fat five wheels in place. I am happy to mount them.
Suspension: All front cast aluminum upper and lower control arms are in solid and tight condition without play. As the high performance German ST coilovers were installed all joints and hardware were wire brushed, cleaned and coated liberally with Permatex anti seize to prevent any future issues. Last summer I had a near flawless D2 Audi A8L I sold sitting on custom suspension nearly slammed to the ground on 19” peeler wheels and the owner told me they were quickly removed for adjustable coilovers as it just sat a bit too low for their liking. If you prefer to slam this machine down a few more inches with these coilovers to close the wheel gaps that is fine. I am leaving it at this ride height as it is. The OEM struts are included.
Currently the car is not insured or registered as it has been in storage at my friend’s shop while I have made the repairs/modifications/upgrades just mentioned. If you would like to hear it run and want to drive it on his street that is fine but as it is transported from the shop it needs to be towed either on a flatbed or on a car dolly with the rear driveline disconnected. I know with State Farm insurance a temporary policy can be acquired with just a VIN#, possibly your company would offer this service as well. Please understand my perspective:. Should we get pulled over during a test drive without license plates and an officer asks for license, insurance and registration how do we answer “But we are just on a test drive, officer”, Nice try, he doesn’t care as my lowered and pristine car hauled off to the impound yard as the towtruck driver tears the whole front end off, and tells me “oops sorry man.” NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!! (I should mention here that last summer the buyer of my Audi A8L drove all the way from Bellefontaine to Cincinnati with no license plates and wasn’t pulled over traveling down I 75 though he did have insurance coverage. I just won’t take that chance as long as I own this car.)
10W40 synthetic oil/filter change has been performed with zero miles, oil pan brushed and painted gloss black, 6 disc CD changer works well and 400 watt AC power inverter with USB charging port is mounted under glovebox. In addition to Kelly Blue book stated value I feel as good a condition as this is in I am asking a fair price considering this magnificent machine is a full $1,200 less asking price than the 2001 A8L I sold last year in essentially the same overall condition with an identical engine and QUATTRO drivetrain.
I only accept cash and I am happy to provide you the clean and clear Indiana title.
