You would have a $5,000 to $6,000 car up and running again, turning heads at stop lights, getting whistled at; if you are into that sort of thing which my semi-vain wife is; or leave the top up everywhere you go and still turn a few heads. The engine swap out repair option I looked into and is available because local salvage yards on Montana in El Paso have used replacement engines between $500 and $900 and I have found a very reasonable guy in same area who swaps engines for $600 engine ID is ATC of the 1.8 L turbo charged is a match, so in donor car Vin# digit #5 should say C on the Audi TT or A4's.
This car has 130,500 miles, silver in color, black interior, AC, heated seats, soft convertible top with back glass all in good shape, turbo engine mated with 6 speed manual transmission has plenty of power, radio blasts and has 6 CD changer behind drivers seat that is functional, very fun to drive car, clutch and AC compressor recently replaced, shifts with ease. Started to use oil this past 6 months which could have come from a seal in overhead cam tainting the timing belt causing it to slip. The engine can be re-built and the estimate is $2400 and change at a local shop that has 2 very good European car mechanics. But you can see why the option of just replacing the engine with a good used one because you can save about $1,000 with good luck that the engine is what they say it is.
