Vehicle Description
For Sale: Citroen 2CV Charleston, probably a 1980/81. Title says it's a 1960. Due to 1980s import restrictions, Citroens though highly desired, as new cars couldn't be imported from France unless retagged as an older model. Since body styles were very similar, many cars were modified and re-tagged for import to the US. This seems to be one. It's legally titled as a 1960, but I think it's a 1980 as the Charleston model was highly popular then. Cool history! Check out the YouTube stories. Citroen 2CV has a very colorful past going back to WWII.
This is a very fun car to drive. Here's some interesting facts. This year is Citroen's 100 year anniversary. This car is the same basic design as the early 1940s, 50s, 60s etc...models, though this one has the larger engine. It's a convertible, and is a 4 door, standard 4 speed with reverse. The shifter goes in through the dash and is not on the floor. Fun! For a small car, this thing sure has a lot of space. For a 2 cylinder, it really moves! The fun of it is in minimalism. It's super light and has the most basic of just about everything. The suspension was designed for post-WWII France, driving over farm fields to get produce to market. It has several unique design features, like inboard brakes, a push-pull shifter, and turn knob high beams that actually cable rotate the front lights up and down. Oh yeah! Did I mention that it's a 2 cylinder!!! Supposed to get 54 miles/gallon! This is a totally unusual car and will be a total pleasure for the US car collector due to it's unique design... and it's here in the States already. This car has it's French plates still and a French inspection card comes with it as well as a bunch of repair manuals and some new parts. Oh yeah, and it has flip windows. They actually flip up and lock in place.
Tires are good and the body looks very solid. I haven't seen any rust other than a surface cosmetic spots here and there. The ignition system and the flashers work great, but the electrical still needs some work, though I'm still enjoying the restoration, and the headlights are coming up soon on my list. The interior is very nice for it's age, but as you can imagine for a vintage car, it needs little repairs here and there.
Ok, so yeah, this car runs and drives well motor-wise. Some times the brakes would stick a bit from it setting for years in a barn, but I just bought a new set for the front. Then, of course, they freed up, haha...so the new brakes are not installed yet as they worked great the last few times I've driven it. Getting the choke just right is an acquired skill, and it revs a bit high, at first but that's just a simple tuning matter. Once it warms up it's fine and super fun to drive.
I got it some months ago and have a parts source and made some improvements... most importantly, a new, stock fuel pump, some gas line and a fuel filter. I bought some new hoses for the heat and venting, but not installed yet.
There's still some restoring to go before inspection... most importantly, it needs a muffler. I have a line on a stainless steel one and probably will get it and install it soon, time permitting. They go for about $90 - $100. If you enjoy old cars and want to do the work you can buy this car at the cheaper price. The more work I do the price will naturally increase. These go for quite a bit fully restored.
I wanted to fully restore this cool unique car, but my VW Campmobile engine just lost compression on a trip to Williamsport, PA, and that repair has to be a priority for me as it was my daily driver. So, fortunately for you, this Citroen 2CV is for sale, now. It's close to road-worthy, but I'm selling it as a project car, salvage.
Ok.... check out the pictures and e-mail back if you'd like to come see it for the purchase. Cheers!
