1939 Plymouth P8

As we say at the mall you never know what is coming through the door and what to my wandering eyes does appear, but a 1939 Plymouth 4 door P8. Now at first you might say so? But after you've perused a lot of shows and seen all the typical deuces, and deluxes, and T buckets, you may be yearning for something different. Here ya go!

For consignment, a 1939 Plymouth P8 4 door hot rod. Not often seen, this car shows Chrysler designers hitting their stride with this car. Aerodynamics were all the rage in styling and this P8 drips with it. A tall split grille, rounded fenders and a sleek profile and this car has the advantage, and we didn't even turn it on.yet!

Exterior
Shades of Miami beach with its teal steel painted exterior and some purple to pink to white flames airbrushed on either side. The front of this car is just gorgeous with its split grille standing tall in the center and rounding over to the hood. Horizontal chrome rigs curve around the V it forms on its way to the hood. On either side lower horizontal ribbed split grilles are on either side. Then we move to the fenders which have been expertly designed and preserved in the teal and these sport wonderful wide bezeled chrome round headlights with a turn signal on top dead center. A running board greets the back of the front fender, goes under the doors for easy access to the cabin, then greets up with another bulbous rear fender which swoops up and down, eventually forming the back of this humpback trunk car. The roofline is not to be outdone using never a straight line and just centerfold like curves. Tinted glass and a split rear oval window add to the look. Taillights are pointed vertical ovals and a smooth curved chromed bumper is on the bottom. Dual exhaust poke out either side from under the bumper. 15 inch polished chromed steel wheels with polished moon caps are on all 4 corners. Did I mention the searchlights and mirrors hanging off the A pillar on both sides? I give you Sweet Sue.

Interior
I'm getting excited as I swing the front conventional hinged and rear suicide doors as I spot some fuzzy broadcloth tuck and roll gray covered panels. Power window toggles and a snappy armrest and door pull are in this field. Below is a plain pattern fuzzy broadcloth panel. Inside more fuzzy gray broadcloth that is on the benches for the front and rear. These have an overstuffed look and have wide smooth gray broadcloth bolsters and smaller tuck and roll inserts which are presented with a bamboo vertical ribbed panel that has a slight green cast to it. A nice contrast to the gray broadcloth. Upfront a snazzy Pilot wood rally wheel is installed. This fronts a snappy dash that has some horizontal ribbed thin panels and a swirl pattern machined aluminum gauge cluster backer. Dolphin round white faced gauges are in this panel. Painted teal steel is also peppering this dash and we see cruise control, heater controls, power front windows, and a Lokar shifter reaching for the driver within a field of clean gray carpeting. On top of the dash is an aftermarket tachometer and below the dash to drivers right is an additional oil pressure gauge. Replacing the clock on the glove box door is possibly a picture of the old gal, Sweet Sue in a field of snow. More overly padded fuzzy gray broadcloth is used for the headliner and a nicely contrasting teal metal surrounds all the glass on the inside.

Drivetrain
The sides of the hood are open and these reveal a 383ci stroker V8 that has a 4-barrel Edelbrock 750cfm carb and an Edelbrock Torker intake. On the back is a 700R4 4-speed automatic and a 10-bolt 3.73 rear axle. Stainless steel block hugger headers are on.

Undercarriage
A beefed up suspension which includes independent coil sprung front and leaf springs with traction bars are now on this undercarriage. Power disc braking in front and power drums on back and a Flowmaster exhaust is in dual form. An aluminum gas tank is also underneath, and it is equipped with an electric fuel pump. All clean and rust-free steel in black framing and teal floor pans. No Drips!

Drive-Ability
I hopped in and felt like I was in 1939 heaven driving this beautiful rod. A comfy interior, and a cinch to drive. Nice acceleration, smooth shifting and good handling with the larger suspension. All functions were working save for the cruise control.

A fabulous build right out of Miami beach style and color rodder. All nicely done with all the amenities and conveniences, rolling down the road at high speed and looking great doing it. Who cares if Fords had the teardrop headlights, this car design rocks!
