Vehicle Description

My Wife would like to find a person that will buy, maintain, and keep her family 1947 Ford car in its Original Condition, NOT MODIFY and NOT MAKE IT A HOT ROD.

With this sale, it must include all of my 47 Ford auto parts that I have such as two transmissions that need to be rebuilt, tow bar, oak wood top rack, front spring, two large wooden boxes full of parts, two shipping containers with parts, spare windows packaged up and one a rear window, many carburetors, fuel pumps, distributors and on and on. Books saved up over 40 years and car show equipment. I have over 60 trophies on the shelf and you can have them all.

It is a 1947 Ford 2dr Super Deluxe Coupe (the family calls The Black Ford). This car has been in my wife’s family since new. In 1947 my wife’s brother traveled to Atlanta Ga from Savannah GA. to buy the Ford car. It has become one of the family

What I heard were two stories. One was that all cars were hard to buy after World War 2 and you would have to get on a list to order a new car. My Brother-in-law found a Ford dealer in Atlanta that located this car at a special price of $1900.00. This was about $300.00 under the table to the dealer but they made the deal. The only paperwork I could find was the Operators Manual 1947 Ford Passenger book in the glove compartment with the following words written on the cover, “Motor # 799A1719517 Price to sell 1900.00 Su.dl-se-Coup” I checked the serial number on the frame and it reads 1719517. The other story was he went to Atlanta and purchased this car from an older woman, used.

My Brother-in law owned the Black Ford for about 2 years until he purchased a new 1949 ford and gave the Black Ford to his Mother in 1949.

While he had the Black Ford he mounted red and blue lights under the fenders and the grill as that was a fad at that time. He also mounted a muffler cut out. My wife worked with her Brother to repair the car and even now works with me to fix the car. She drives the car once in a while when we take it out for a drive.

The Smith family took trips to New York and Texas in the Black Ford in 1955 and 1956. My wife was in high school in 1956 drove and drag raced it around town (Savannah Ga). She also helped to drive to Fort Worth Texas 3 times at that time. She also helped to drive many times to the Smoky Mountains. We met and married in 1959 and The USAF transferred me in 1963 to Glasgow AFB Montana.

My wife’s mother drove the Black Ford to work at Candler Hospital in Savannah and parked it under a large oak tree. They have now blocked the area under the tree for parking.

I understand that the short block was changed out in 1954 and the car was painted the first time at that time.

In 1967 my wife’s mother called us while we were stationed in The US Air force at F.E.Warren AFB Cheyenne Wyoming and said she was going to scrap the Black Ford or come and get it. When we arrived in Savannah, GA I found Ga title certificates of title registrations way back to 1954 and my wife’s mother's name on the 1954 title in a drawer at their home.

A friend of mine in Cheyenne gave me a frame mounting tow bar to take with me to Georgia to tow the car back to Wyoming. I mounted 12-volt lights on the rear bumper and off we went.

In Cheyenne at F.E. Warren AFB, I started working on the Black Ford and had to remove the body parts to repair them (the body was never been removed from the frame). I found out that I had to replace both right fenders as Mrs. Smith was so short she could not see the right side very well and they were banged up and not repairable. I found 2 perfect green colored fenders in a junkyard. I purchased 2 other 1947 cars that were in bad shape and took off as many parts as possible before scraping them. The engine block was in bad shape the # 7 cylinder has no compression so my wife and I drove it to the Base Auto Shop and together pulled the engine out and a local engine repair shop came and loaded in his truck, to change out the short block. I pulled the Trans and rebuilt it. I also changed out the grill and floor board. I also purchased a complete wiring harness from New England Wiring Company and rewired the car. After we reinstalled the engine drove it to town to have it painted. Before it was painted both kick panels were replaced by the Cadillac Dealer with Cadillac Sheet Steel. My wife worked for the Avis Company owned by the Cadillac Dealer and received 40% off labor. The repair shop had a laugh over the Cadillac steel in a Ford.

In 1971 I used the tow bar to pull the car to Nobnoster, MO. (Whiteman AFB). There I found two rear brake drums at a junkyard in Kansas City and replaced them. In one of our trips to Kansas City, the Left rear wheel came off and rolled down the Highway and it broke the axle and dug a ridge in the highway. We found the wheel and two lug nuts put the wheel back on and drove it back home. This was about 1972 and there were parts catalogs out now and I ordered a new axle and replaced it. In 1972

I entered its first car show in KC Kansas.

In 1974 we drove the car over the Smoky Mountains the long way ( not on the super highways ) from Saint Louis on the way back to Savannah GA to live after I retired from the Air Force.

No repairs were made in Savannah but I did use the car to go back and forth to work. Moving in 1983 to Saint Parkersburg FL. I found a shop to have the engine short block replaced again (he repaired the clutch and Trans while he had the engine in his shop). I found out that it needed a new short block so he sent the engine to the Daytona Speedway Machine shop and they changed out the block, installed adjustable lifters, 1950 Ford crank for better oil circulation, and other things that I was never told about. The Heads, intake, and exhaust manifolds are original. I understand the Speedway mechanics enjoyed working on this old V8 engine. It was also repainted in St Pete. It was also completely reupholstered (the first time) All of the chrome has been replated and the stainless steel made like new. We now have moved to Fort Smith AR with the Black Ford on a flatbed. So all these years I have kept the car in stock shape. I purchased a Trans that came out of 48 Mercury. We have entered many car shows and driving tours. The Judges in the Pepit Jean Mountain car show said not to repaint it again as it looks classic as is. It stills gets first place at the shows.

There are always repairs to be made as it gets older. I just resealed the steering box. Right now the steering wheel needs to be refinished (I refinished it in 1984 and hairline cracks have formed again) the body could be repainted back to perfect condition; it was painted in 1983 and has scratches in the paint. The paint used was Acrylic Enamel.
