1950 Studebaker Champion Coupe The 1950 Studebaker Champion Starlight coupe attracted motorists with its ultramodern styling. Its center "nose" called to mind an airplane, and its wraparound rear window and long, horizontal rear deck were radically different from "teardrop" cars of the 1930s and 1940s. The 1950 and 1951 Studebakers marked a sharp break from 1930's streamlined styling and were the beginning of flamboyant, futuristic styling. This highly customized version of the Champion Coupe has undergone not only a frame-off restoration, but has gone through complete design changes, keeping original close at hand, but putting on a very personal touch. Using parts from various automobiles, as well as a new engine, has made this Champion go from a conversation piece to full on gossip! All high-end materials were painstakingly fitted, machined, and embellished to create this radical machine. Exterior The original body had the front bumper removed, then the front was nosed (removal of any ornaments or badging) decked (removal of any adornments to the back of the car particularly on the trunk areas) and shaved (removal of exterior door handles) leaving very clean lines. The wrap around rear windows were filled in, which looks better than the original, as a common criticism with the original was it was hard to tell which way it was going. Summer Breeze PPG paint was then layered on, and then highlighted with PPG Coral scallops. Then Boyds chromed wheels with bullet air filler caps, were placed on all 4 corners. Now there is no doubt which way it is going...Fast forward! Interior The interior has totally undergone an upgrade with power windows, doors and antenna. An Alpine Kicker sound system installed and a Billet Specialties steering wheel on an adjustable column resides within the interior with Studebaker logo stitched custom leather wide bucket seats. Seating is fully adjustable electrically, and extremely comfortable. Custom logo stitched carpet covers areas throughout, as well as the rear seating area hitch was removed and is covered as well. All the badging and more adorn the interior throughout and add bling to the already beautiful passenger space. Special attention has also been paid to the trunk area, which presents as nice as the passenger compartment. Drivetrain A 350ci Chevrolet Crate engine bored out .030 is topped with an Edelbrock 650CFM intake manifold. Exhausting is through HPC coated headers. A TH350 automatic transmission, actuated by a Lokar shifter, drives an S-10 differential with 3.42:1 gearing. Front suspension is provided by a Mustang II and has power steering attached, as well as 11-inch power disc front brakes. Copious amounts of flame engraved chrome have been added to the engine, and upon opening the hood, it's like jewelry for the male population. Framed award/description and specification artworks, as well as extra belts, remotes for the sound system, and some business cards from the car aptly named "Stude Gone WIld" Many bits of extra eye candy are revealed upon closer personal inspection of this vehicle.
