The newly designed vehicles were lower, wider and longer, with the wheelbase increasing to 133 inches for many of the lines. 1954 marked the first appearance of Cadillac’s now iconic wrap around windshield that was first seen on several experimental show cars a few years before. Cadillac’s front end was extensively reshaped with an integrated bumper and grille combination that introduced Cadillac’s famous “dollar grin.” Under the hood was Cadillac’s proven 331 cubic inch V8 that was retuned and was now good for an increased 230 horsepower. Options and amenities continued to grow in number, with 1954 marking the first appearance of power assisted brakes while the power steering system saw a decrease in ratio, to improve maneuverability, especially at low speeds. With these improvements all across the line the Fleetwood Series 60 Special looked and performed better than ever and the model continued to attract buyers of a higher caliber, thanks in part to its limousine-like stature.
