Ford's historic Victoria name returned to the top-tier car in 1955, and none showed off the premium style better than the 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria Skyliner. Not only did it have elegant lines, but also the big clear bubble top roof makes it extremely distinctive and extremely rare.

Fords were instantly recognizable with their sweeping chrome trim extending from the headlight all the way back to the tail - creating the perfect dividing line the two-tone red and white. Furthermore, it's easy to distinguish the Crown Victorias as the upper echelon of the already top-of-the-line Ford Fairlanes, because only these have the encompassing brightwork that visually separates the front and rear passenger compartments. This looks quite tasteful on the regular coupes, but the band of bright trim over the roof seems to be tailor-made for the Skyliner series. The front seats have a great pattern, and they have a more individualized style than the standard bench. But our favorite style element is how the door panels have a similar swoopy design to emulate the exterior trim. These door panels even wrap into the dashboard in a continuous sweep. The driver's seat feels like a time machine back to the '50s, including the stylized steering wheel and the AM radio that's there for display. And the speedometer reminds you that Ford was ready to show off the new Plexiglas era on more than just the special roof. And speaking of the roof, these were often used as a selling point for dealers to install an air conditioning system. So to have a period-correct Frigiking A/C still on display really helps tell this car's unique and premium story (you will need to service it to have it fully functioning again.)

This is a U-code car, and so that means it was born with V8 power. That's why it's great to see such a correct-looking 272 cubic-inch motor under the hood today. The V8 has nice acceleration; the dual exhaust has a nice low rumble; and the optional two-speed automatic transmission gives it a nice cruising attitude. That's why, in total, it's such a nice classic. Add in power steering, and it's easy to keep this Fairlane Crown Victoria wandering the boulevards on a Saturday night.
