Vehicle Description

We recently purchased this 1965 TR4. Some of the unique things of the car is it was a California delivery and while the heritage certificate calls it a 1964, you can see in the photos next to the VIN plate a green tag screwed on that says Triumph, STC-65. This was a requirement in California for a car that was a 1964 but sold and titled as a 1965. The STC stood for Sold To Customer. Once leaving California, the car resided in North Carolina, adult owned and kept inside. The car has virtually no evidence of rust or damage from an accident. What really excited me about this car were the following: 1. A true numbers matching engine 2. A factory surrey top car with both hard and soft centers 3. A factory overdrive car 4. A 50,000 actual mile car The car had great bones and a great motor, but many of its interior components were certainly tired, and there was miscellaneous things that needed cleaning up, repairing or adjusting. We have removed all of the squeaks and rattles, replaced massive amounts of parts and turned this into an exceptionally nice driving car. While the value of this car in my mind is previous items 1-4, I feel as I own an identical car that I knew the right things to turn it into a fabulous driver and a well sorted car. Below are the items that we have done. I have spent an exorbinent amount of time and a substantial amount of money performing the following improvements/upgrades. I broke the restoration down into three categories: mechanical, cosmetic, and improvements: Mechanical: Remove transmission, drain fluid, installed new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bushing, and new fork pin. Put new rubber gasket set on transmission tunnel and re-install transmission tunnel with proper hardware. Remove upper a-arms, bead blasted, painted, and installed new bushings Replaced front brake hoses, rear hose, flushed system, and adjusted brakes as well as emergency brake Removed steering column, installed new bushings, bead blasted and painted, installed all new mounts Removed steering rack and replaced with new rack and new solid mounts Pulled front hubs, removed bearings, cleaned and re-packed with new seals Greased chassis Removed gas tank, power washed, and sealed Installed new air cleaners and adjusted carb synchronization and mixtures Cleaned every inch of original harness, and replaced wires that had been cut with proper colored wires, and re-wrapped harness under dash Replaced amp gauge Welded front valence properly, which was rattling Removed exhaust system, bent for clearance, re-welded and replaced mounts Replaced new radiator shroud and mounting hardware, installed harness above with clamps as original Replaced steering coupler, top and bottom, with safety wire and horn ground strap Replaced both horns Replaced wheel studs for solid wheel application Cosmetic: Removed entire interior. Stripped seats to bare frames, bead blasted and painted, installed new diaphragms, full foam kits, and new leather covers as original Removed all carpet Added sound deadener to floors, heat shield to transmission tunnel and firewall Repaired seat mounts Installed OE grey carpet with jute felt Removed door panels, removed window tracks, repaired window tracks and installed all new felt, repaired window winders, re-installed glass to mechanisms with proper cork Purchased new surrey top mounting screws as original Installed cant rail rubber seals to Surrey hard top Fit surrey top properly to the car, then adjusted windows to surrey Added sound deadener to inside of doors, installed new door panels with clips, OE. Added finished screws and caps as original Replaced as needed door handles and winders with proper springs and pins installed Removed and replaced all interior panels with OE heat seam English vinyl from England as original Removed dash assembly, dis-assembled all gauges and cleaned, replaced chrome where necessary, installed LED lights to all gauges, re-wired lighting circuit as original, repaired rheostat. Installed $700 English walnut dash, high gloss, as original from Prestige Autowood Stripped and repaired steering wheel, primed and painted to high gloss as original Removed and replaced with NOS, overdrive switch and turn signal switch Replaced horn brush and horn brush ring Installed proper shift boot and shift knob Removed radio opening and replaced with OE radio blanking plate Replaced antenna Removed all components from firewall forward, and re-sprayed engine bay and front valence Cleaned and sanded and painted inside trunk area Replaced gas tank panel with poly gas tank kit Installed new ¼” trunk floor with straps as original Removed all necessary exterior components, wet sanded to 2000 grit, buffed and then polished entire exterior of body Straightened rocker panels and flanges on bottom, filled as necessary small dents, primed and block sanded, re-sprayed rocker panels with installation of TR4A lower rocker moldings and clips Removed trunk rack and plugged holes with plastic plugs, painted body color, trunk rack goes with car and can easily be installed if that is your liking Got brand new rubber floor mats as original Removed all door strikers, stripped all paint, vapor honed to original luster, re-installed with all proper screws, adjusted doors, oiled hinges, fit doors to close perfectly with exceptional gaps Detail of car Improvements: Replaced bent wire wheels and wrong size tires with upgraded 8 spoke alloy wheels (identical to original factory optional American racing mags, as shown in original owner’s manual) Installed new Goodyear tires, mounted and balanced Aligned car Adjusted timing and carburetors, road tested De-squeaked anything that squeaked or rattled Summary: Everything on the car now works as it should. Performance is tremendously improved, with the clutch taking up exactly as it should. Overdrive solenoid adjusted so that it engages immediately in 2nd/3rd/4th as it should. Brakes now have a rock hard pedal that stop in a direct straight line. Handling of the car tremendously improved with zero play in the steering and a much more positive feel with 6” rims and tires. Car is now quiet and does not have any exhaust rattles, wind noises are tremendously reduced, the car feels as solid or even more so than it did when new. When comparing this car to others, be aware that almost every TR4 I’ve ever driven is not like this car. They all have had color changes, most never had a surrey top, and most have been rusted and glued back together. When you close the doors on this car you can immediately tell how wonderful it is. The car truly now is ready to use without any thoughts of what is the next thing that is going to break, which wires are wrapped around instead of soldered, what is rattling or getting ready to fall off, what is the next major service needed, etc. All of these things have been dealt with and the car presents, feels, and is truly a different car.
