Vehicle Description
CPR is proud to add to its inventory this extremely rare 1967 250SL, factory 5 speed transmission Mercedes-Benz. This particular Pagoda was delivered new to Italy and finished in Anthracite Grey (DB172) over Black MB-tex (116). In the late 1970s to early 1980s it found it’s way to rural southern California where it ended up sitting, along with a large car collection, in a reconverted giant industrial chicken coop, unmolested for the better of the next three decades. In 2009 Cyril Mischler, one of CPR’s partners, discovered and subsecuently purchased the car from its California owner. Mischler brought it back to his home state of Arizona to undertake a complete, frame-off restoration. Mischler notes that thanks to a lifetime of very favorable, dry climate in both Italy and southern California this particular example was extraordinarily well preserved with absolutely no rust damage to deplore. A perfect candidate for a high level restoration. A true barn find! Famed 300SL Gullwing restorer Jared King from Transcendental Finishes in Prescott, AZ was commissioned to head the full restoration project. King himself performed the minimal repair the body needed and after a bare metal restoration re-sprayed the Pagoda in its original Anthracite Grey color (DB172). The interior was upgraded to the correct light red (1088) Mercedes Benz German leather and carpet. Metric Motors of Canoga Park, CA performed a complete motor overhaul. The rest of the mechanical components were either restored or replaced with Mercedes-Benz original parts. After a three year restoration performed by the best in the business the end result is a truly spectacular 250SL in a stunningly beautiful color combination. Adding to lifelong fortunate climate conditions and an exceptional level of restoration, the rarity of the factory ZF 5 speed transmission makes this pagoda a true gem. As a reminder about 49,000 pagodas were produced from 1963-1971 but only a mind boggling 886 units were factory fitted with the extremely desirable 5 speed ZF S5-20 gearbox. Because most of these wonderful cars were delivered to harsh climate parts of Europe most succumbed to rust and decay. To find a good candidate for restoration is nearly impossible. A well preserved and well restored factory 5 speed pagoda is without a doubt the holy grail of the pagoda collecting world. Pagodas of that rarity and stunning condition are ever more difficult to come by and the opportunity to own a true ZF 5 speed pagoda of such high quality is truly exceptional. Super rare factory and number matching, 5 speed ZF S5-20 transmission. Stunning color combination. European (Italy) market model (attractive headlights, bumpers, metric gauges, no side markers). Complete engine rebuilt by Metric Motors of Canoga Park, CA. Body work by Jared King of Transcendental Finishes of Prescott, AZ. Both hard and soft tops. Becker Europa slim face radio restored by Emil Besier. Retains all its original factory engine bay spot welds and factory headlight notches.
