FOUR-OWNER, MACNEISH-CERTIFIED AUTHENTICITY It's always nice when a car comes with a full ownership history, especially when that car is fully documented by a known expert. This real-deal Z/28, authenticated by Jerry MacNeish in April of 2018, has been in the stewardship of just four enthusiasts since it rolled off the showroom floor. The car's first family, which purchased it at Cincinnati's Queen City Chevrolet, sold out to a neighboring family a few years into ownership. And by 1977, this Chevy's third owner had added it to a growing collection of timeless muscle cars. Offering $950 on a $1,000 asking price, owner number three is perhaps the most significant. He was a retired General Motors employee who made a habit of collecting interesting classics and the increasingly rare parts they often required. He was noted for keeping his collection factory-correct in an era where so many gearheads were swapping worn out 'used car parts' for aftermarket 'upgrades'. That dedication to authenticity gained the attention of the fourth and current owner who, after many years of trying, finally purchased the Camaro of his dreams. Residing with those two aficionados for the bulk of its life, this Chevy logged few miles, and was kept largely original except for a quality repaint that was conducted sometime around 1993. Naturally, that refinishing included correct Cortez Silver pigment between all-original sheetmetal and Tuxedo Black Rally Stripes. The car's hood is correctly flat, as are its front valance and decklid, which sport no spoilers of any kind. Familiar T3 headlights lead original chrome and stainless. And as you might expect, all emblems and trimmings survive straight from the factory. ORIGINAL, NUMBERS-MATCHING POWER Between the fenders, a clean engine compartment frames an original, 302 cubic inch Chevrolet V8. There are many factory-fresh components, including an original intake, original heads, an original starter, an original alternator, an original voltage regulator, an original Holley carburetor and an original brake booster that's finished with a correct master cylinder. The car's hard-to-find smog system is likewise original. Sparks are sequenced through a date-correct distributor. Cooling is provided by an original, re-cored radiator, which, for the sake of safety, siphons a new, high-flow water pump. That said, the original water pump is included with the car's sale. And the engine is verified by a correct 3932386 casting number, an October (J) 26th (26), 1968 (8) casting date, a 302 (DZ) assembled in Flint (V) on November (11) 2nd (02) build stamp and a matching 539713 partial VIN. That small block spins an original Muncie 4-speed, which hangs a correct 3925660 casting number in front of a 1969 (9) Muncie (P) M21 (B) assembled on October ( R ) 30th (30) build stamp and a matching 539713 partial VIN. That transmission twists an original 12-bolt axle, which displays a familiar 3894860NF casting number beside an October (J) 25th (25) casting date and a 12-bolt/posi-trac/4.10 (BV) assembled on November (11) 4th (04) by Detroit Gear & Axle second shift (G2) build stamp. That rear end pushes a factory-spec suspension. Exhaust travels through chambered pipes. Power-assisted discs and drums provide quick and reliable stops. Everything rolls on date-correct Rally Wheels, which spin E70-15 Firestone Sport Car 200s around original trim rings and original center caps. And clean, original floors are free of sloppy, retrofitted undercoating. ORIGINAL, DELUXE DIGS The Deluxe Black Interior hiding behind this Camaro's Cortez Silver doors is a mostly-original affair that still looks great! Tall seats are believed to be original, with the exception of freshened upholstery on the driver's bucket. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash hangs stainless-trimmed foot pedals below rebuilt factory telemetry and a Delco AM radio. Monochromatic floor mats protect retrofitted carpet that's centered on a requisite Hurst shifter. That seat, dash and rug trifecta is completely framed by fade-free Deluxe side panels. The driver spins a wood-trimmed steering wheel. And behind the passengers, a solid trunk hides an original jack, an original spare wheel and a vintage spare tire.
