DOCUMENTED OWNERS, ORIGINAL METAL AND FRESH PAINT
Back in the summer of 1969, in an isolated city in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania, John Shumar walked into Patrick Dodge and ordered a legendary Coronet with all the good stuff: V2 High Impact Hemi Orange paint, an H2X deluxe Black interior, a D21 4-speed gearbox, a D69 4.10 Dana axle complete with a D91 Sure Grip differential and, of course, the coveted A12 440 Six Pack Package. As happened with most A12 cars, this Dodge's daily driver duties were spliced with gratuitous racing and, roughly two years and 8K miles after its purchase, the big 440 experienced catastrophic failure. John, disappointed that Chrysler deemed the car "out of warranty", decided to stash the disassembled MoPar in his basement. And roughly 36 years later, the car was discovered by its second owner as a mostly original, mostly complete unicorn that had been locked in dry storage for most of its existence.
Although this Dodge's original block had long been discarded, John had kept the engine's internals. So, the new owner promptly sourced a date-correct 440 and put the car back on the road. That said, an original muscle car is, well, original... Meaning, despite its great condition and miniscule miles, this Coronet was still an old car. After spending the past decade floating through various collections, the coupe met its eighth and current owner who, after much contemplation, decided to do a little freshening. And that's how this mostly-original beast ended up with new paint, new bumpers, new seat covers, a fully serviced suspension and a rebuilt engine.
The A12 Package was Chrysler's very successful bid at creating a street legal platform for drag racers. At the front of this classy B-Body, an original, bee-branded grille hangs original headlights above a fresh chrome bumper and clear parking lamps. Behind that grille, an original A12 hood centers bright "SIX PACK" scripts, in the middle of four stainless pins and smooth black paint. Above that hood, original vinyl caps original glass, which is cased inside original stainless trim. Below that glass, a striped profile hangs traditional door handles amid bright wheel trim, clear marker lamps and a correct chrome mirror. And at the back of the car, a black valance centers a bold "DODGE" script and 3-bulb taillights between polished exhaust tips, a small Bee emblem and a second fresh bumper.
440 SIX PACK
Make good use of this Dodge's stainless hood pins and you'll find 440 cubic inches of date-correct Magnum that's authenticated by a 2536430 casting number and a May 22ND, 1969 casting date. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, and almost as feared, Dodge's storied 440 SIX PACK was designed to be the industry's best combination of comfort, streetability and big block performance. Oxygen whips through an original air cleaner and three freshly rebuilt Holleys, which are bolted to an original Edelbrock intake. At the front of those carbs, an original points distributor sequences fire through thick Taylor ThunderVolt plug wires. At the sides of that intake, Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast original exhaust manifolds. Cooling is provided by an original radiator that's cinched to pliable hoses via simple squeeze clamps. Power is provided by a MoPar Yellow Cap battery. And aesthetically, the buff powerplant, pulled and fully rebuilt in 2017, is clean, mean and ready to roll!
AS IT WAS
Everything bolted under this 8K-mile Dodge is correct and impeccably finished, and the level of detail on the car's chassis is truly astounding. Orange-dusted floors shade bare hardware, Cosmoline-coated control arms, a bare steering linkage and Satin Black chassis components, just as the factory intended. The aforementioned RB V8 funnels power to an original A833 4-speed, which twists a correct Dana 60 axle that's finished with a Sure Grip differential and big, 4.10 gears. Below that proven drivetrain, a heavy duty front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension has been completely rebuilt to include a correct sway bar, correct 'uneven' leaf springs and correct 11-inch brakes. Exhaust is handled by free-flowing, 2.5-inch pipes, which jettison cooked dinosaurs through an H-shaped crossover and traditional turbo mufflers. And torque meets the pavement through original H-code wheels, which spin G70-15 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around black powder coat and chrome lug nuts.
LARGELY ORIGINAL, PURELY AWESOME
Open this Coronet's solid doors and sit down where legendary MoPar power melds seamlessly with a no frills, no-nonsense driving environment. At the center of the floor, firm bench seats sport fresh vinyl covers. The car's unrestored dash hangs clean factory gauges, complete with a working clock, beside a familiar Chrysler Solid State radio. At the bottom of that dash, fade-free carpet floats Super Bee floor mats around an original Hurst shifter. In front of the driver, a simple steering wheel spins sculpted spokes around a fratzog-branded centerpiece. And behind the passengers, a carefully repainted trunk is correct all the way down to its original spare wheel and original spare tire.
