The Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1967 as the Pontiac counterpart to Chevrolet's Camaro. Pontiac wanted to produce a two-door sports car similar to the Corvette (based on the Pontiac Banshee concept car) but GM was afraid this would cut into the Corvette market.
