Paired with Canepa's 634 hours of industry-leading preservation work painstakingly performed and documented on all of its systems and components, this original survivor 1973 Porsche 911T Targa is a fantastic preservation example. On October 22nd, 1973 Jack Good of Riverwoods, Illinois traded in his 1970 911E for a new 1973 Porsche 911T Targa in stunning Emerald Green paint. Shoreline Porsche in Winnetka, Illinois gave him $5,500 for his trade-in towards the total price of $10,545.50. The new Targa featured factory 911S options: 6" Fuchs wheels, a factory 911S front spoiler, 911S Koni Shock Absorbers, and front and rear stabilizers. It was also ordered with a Blaupunkt "Frankfurt" radio, the comfort kit, fog lamps and tinted glass. Unique to this car due to it being a late model 1973, it is equipped with Bosch's K-Jetronic Continuous Injection System (CIS). Its next recorded owner, Graham Loynd of Richland, WA sold the car to Ken McAllister of Yakima, Washington in September of 1987 with 10,880 miles on the odometer. McAllister would sell the car in August of 1990 with 11,729 miles on the odometer, and the Targa over the next 5 years cover only a few more thousand miles. It received a major engine service in May of 1993 at 15,145 miles. When this 911T rolled through Canepa's doors, it was immediately inspected from front to back and it was deemed to be the perfect candidate for a preservation restoration. A preservation restoration is a sympathetic restoration to only the aspects that need attention, with the focus on retaining as much of the car's originality as possible. With such an amazing, original and low mileage car, a complete restoration was unnecessary. With Canepa's past experience with highly original cars, the Targa only needed to be freshened in order to return to the road. However, with this being Canepa, the preservation process is unlike any other and brings it to another level. The preservation process beings with a complete disassembly of all of a car's components. All systems were removed to be serviced or refinished to original condition, ensuring nothing was left to question. The original engine and transmission were first removed from the chassis so that they could both be carefully cleaned by hand. The engine was taken down to the long block to ensure that every component was checked, cleaned and, if required, refinished. All the fuel lines and hoses were removed and replaced, while the distributer was complete rebuilt. While the engine was out, the flywheel was surfaced and a new clutch assembly was installed. The factory exhaust system was removed and refinished beautifully, and new firewall material was added to the engine bay. With the engine and transmission now serviced, new engine and transmission mounts were fitted to complete the engine bay. Ensuring that no stone was left unturned on this highly original Targa, suspension and brakes were the next items on the list of preservation. All of the Porsche's suspension hardware and brake tins were removed from the car, disassembled and correctly replated. New Koni shocks were installed, while all of the suspension components were powder coated and bushings were installed all around. The brakes received an equal level of treatment, with the front and rear calipers being rebuilt and replated, new wheel bearings installed, and new brake pads on all four corners. While the mechanical work was being completed the entire chassis was hand cleaned, taking extraordinary care to preserve all of the original finishes. New seals were installed for the doors and hood. While the windows were out, the Emerald Green paint was lightly polished to bring the special paint color to a show-quality luster. The original 911T interior is like new and a shining example of how amazing rare originality can survive decades of time. Being stored indoors attributes to the interior not having any UV damage or any evidence that this car was exposed to the elements. After hours of meticulous work had been performed, the car was reassembled, tuned, given a final detail and then thoroughly road tested. With a total of 634 hours of work performed at Canepa, it was one of the finest 911T preservation restorations Canepa had ever performed. Shortly afterwards, the car was purchased and it would be enjoyed for a little over 4 years with the same owner. The 911T would return to Canepa recently with only 312 miles added since it completed its preservation restoration. With the quality work performed in 2014, the car only needed a mild cleaning by hand and light foam-pad only polishing. With its Emerald Green paint now in glistening show condition, its mechanicals in period-correct fashion, original interior pristine and a dialed-in driving experience, this 1973 Porsche 911T Targa is ready to have a new owner enjoy its award-worthy originality.
