1976 MG Midget The common belief is that the name "M.G." stands for "Morris Garages". Whether or not this is true has been the subject of much debate over the years. While it is much easier to simply accept the most visually obvious answer to the issue, there is substantial evidence that it is not true. The other side of the argument states that M.G. stands for itself and is not an abbreviation, but rather a name in itself. Evidence for this argument is on the vehicle maker's plate which always state the full name of the company who built it. On every M.G. made, it states "The M.G. Car Company", never "The Morris Garages Car Company". Even looking back to the earliest days of M.G., one cannot find Morris Garages listed on any company letterhead or even in the very first M.G. Magazine of 1933. Gracing our halls here at Classic Auto Mall is this mini version of what could be considered a resto-mod. With a removal of rubber bumpers, some body modifications, a ground up restoration all the while bolting on new parts and adding some bling, we have a nifty little sports car with some modern conveniences. Exterior With every body panel taken off and worked to perfection, then sprayed with a sky blue enamel, we see now a very straight and true body. With the gaudy rubber bumpers removed, the car presents as an older version, and now has no bumpers...but a much cleaner line. A chromed honeycombed grille framed by dual restored Lucas glass headlights with beautiful bezels front this car. Stainless rockers on either side, newly chromed mirrors and a nicely restored windshield frame are noted. The rear of the car retains its original octagonal badging on the trunk lid, and original tail light configuration. The triple windshield wiper configuration is used due to the small height and large width of the windscreen. Sport Edition wheels have low profile all weather radials attached on all four corners. A new black convertible top glides up and down smoothly and is manually operated. Interior With the top down one can gaze in to the totally restored interior which makes use of snazzy black leather wrapped buckets with white piping. A new dash houses all the correct and essential gauges and knobs with a few extras. An aftermarket JVC AM/FM/Bluetooth/CD radio fits snugly into the dash. This is fronted by a billet style aluminum topped gear shifter. The original carpet remains on the floor and is worn, especially on the driver's side. New door panels are installed, and a dual chromed roller has been added. Drivetrain The stock 1,493cc 4-cylinder engine was completely overhauled, and now sports a new air cleaner setup, a copper clad heater box, aluminum radiator, and backs up to a new stainless firewall. Attached is a 4-speed manual transmission. Undercarriage Very clean, rust free (amazing its British!!) and totally restored and looking pristine. Mostly original excepting the rear which was swapped out for a rebuilt rear. Having a resto-mod is one of the coolest things one can do these days with the practice and theory of it being all the rage. This car definitely fits into the resto-mod category with its shaved bumpers, engine e mods, and interior upgrades. Having an original is sweet but having better than original is even sweeter.
