The US Army awarded contracts to three companies: AM General, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental to design and develop 11 prototype HMMWV's. US Army and AM General test drivers drove Humvee's over rocky hills, through deep sand and mud, in water up to 60 inches deep, in desert heat and arctic cold. Still, HMMWVs passed with flying colors, often easily exceeding even the toughest standards. The development and operational testing was conducted in 1982 and, in 1983, the US Army awarded a $1.2 Billion contract to AM General to immediately manufacture 55,000 HMMWV's. In 1989, the Humvee entered combat as part of Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama. They have become the backbone of U.S. forces around the world.
