Vehicle Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' The Sragga Collection event, 20 - 21 September 2019. Estimate: €20,000 - €30,000 Lovely blue over blue-and-ivory colour combination Flathead V-8 with three-speed column-shift transmission Made famous by the Hollywood actor James Dean in the 1955 movie Rebel Without a Cause, the 1949-1951 Mercury Eight has become a cult favorite among car buffs and collectors. The 1949 Mercury was the most significant new model in the company's 10-year history. All Mercury body shells (except the station wagon) were shared with the 'baby' Lincoln rather than with Ford as had been the case since 1941. The front-end sheet metal and grille were uniquely Mercury, providing instant model recognition. This classic example is powered by Ford's ubiquitous flathead 110 hp V-8, which is shifted via a three-speed manual transmission. Finished in a lovely shade of blue, it is highlighted by whitewall tyres and a contrasting blue-and-ivory knit interior. One of 132,082 four-door sports sedans built for 1950, it is as attractive an automobile today as when it rolled off the line in 1950. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pg19 .
