Vehicle Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Essen event, 11 - 12 April 2019. Estimate: €85.000 - €125.000 Desirable Series II example Well equipped, including factory air conditioning The first twin-rotor production car First breaking cover at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, attendees were wowed by a new Mazda prototype. Dubbed the Cosmo, its otherworldly design impressed but its ingenuity was not only skin deep. It boasted an innovated twin-rotor engine, one that could rev to 7,000 rpm despite having a displacement of under one litre. Regular production began in 1967, and the Cosmo proved to be a splendid little grand tourer. The Series II Cosmo, designated the L10B, was introduced in July of 1968. The rotary engine now produced 128 bhp, which was now managed by an upgraded five-speed gearbox, making it good for a top speed of over 190 km/h. Furthermore, the wheelbase was lengthened by 15 in., allowing for more cabin space and a better ride, yet overall length remained unchanged. The brakes were now servo-assisted, and a handful of cosmetic updates were adapted. Fewer than 1,200 were built, all right-hand drive for the Japanese domestic market (as well as a small number bound for Australia), before production ceased in 1972. This particular Cosmo is one such second-series example and was brought to Europe several years ago from a collection in Japan. There, it had been well maintained by several enthusiast owners, all from approximately the same area of Japan, where it was serviced by the official Mazda dealer. Prior to being shipped to Europe, the car was properly sorted by Japanese specialists, and the engine was overhauled at 58,000 km. Upon arriving in Europe, the car passed through an owner in the UK before being acquired by its current owner. With him, the car has remained well maintained and preserved, having been driven under 200 km. The car that helped cement Mazda's place in the market and one that undoubtedly paved the way for the MX-5 Miata, RX-7 and RX-8, no collection of Japanese sports cars should be without a Cosmo.
