Vehicle Description
In case you don't recognize it, you are looking at a rare M170 Willys Front Line Ambulance, the Great Grandfather of the Jeep Scrambler! This vehicle is in very good condition and has undergone a comprehensive refreshment with new wiring, a rebuilt engine, new water-proof distributor, plugs and ignition wires, new hoses, clamps and fluids, a new steering wheel and a new Beachwood top and canvas cushions and it comes with complete in-and-out military snorkel equipment, first aid kit, shop manual and a folding stretcher.
The engine is the F Head Hurricane 4 cylinder set up with the Borg Warner 3 Speed synchronized transmission and the Dana 18 twin stick transfer cases.
The M170 specialty vehicles - used as ambulances, radio carriers and front line couriers - were manufactured by Kaiser Jeep of Toledo, Ohio, in the '50s and '60s. Compared to a standard Jeep, they have a 20 inch longer wheelbase for transporting extra equipment, officers or injured soldiers on stretchers. A larger fuel tank increased range to 300 miles, which allowed it to cover the greater distances between the front line and and base. Just over 4,000 were produced.
This hard-to-find, rare and useful piece of equipment is, as stated, the origin of the civilian Scrambler (CJ6) being larger than the standard M38A1 (CJ5) with its longer wheel base, storage compartments and higher headroom.
The vehicle operates on a 24 volt system with new, twin in-line batteries as well as high and low positions for four wheel drive when taken out of two wheel drive for the pavement. Starts, runs, shifts and stops, just like it should. Note that this vehicle will top out at 50 mph, so it is not meant for the highway.
The only minor items that need attention would be fixing the gas gauge and oil temp gauge, if desired. Most anything is available through online suppliers. The engine runs like a top, shifts perfectly and she sports new data plates, unblemished seat covers and a new top.
No help selling and no terms other than cash and local pickup, so please don't ask. I might consider an interesting vintage motorcycle as partial trade, but that's it.
If the ad is up, the jeep is still for sale. Text me and I will call you back.
Thanks for checking it out.
