Up for sale is my running and driving SA-FB RX7 best suited as a toy, but is actually dailyable if you want to put up with rotary gas mileage.
It has a clean title with a classic plate so you don’t have to worry about tabs anymore. I’m selling it because I originally bought it for the parts, but ended up with a fully functional souped up rotary vehicle.
I originally bought it non running as a mystery car and ended up finding that it has quite a lot of discontinued Racing Beat aftermarket parts. I have taken it to autocross in Monroe where a lot of the old timers have told me that it has history as a drift car there. The engine has been ported, the rat’s nest emissions system is gone, it has an original Weber IDA 48 that I’ve rebuilt and cleaned, and there is bar welded in between the two rear wheel wells from the inside for easier slides. The interior is stripped and gutted, but the chassis is in great condition for its age. I’ve cleaned up the interior and taken the grime off the engine. There is no rust in the major structural areas such as the wheel wells, but there is some around the car; with most most annoying is a rust spot with a small crack at the bottom of the hatch where the water runs and will leak if the drain tubing gets clogged. I recommend having a way to jack it up using the pinch welds, a flat pad to put between the frame and jack, or jacking it by the subframe. Since it is a chokeless carb and what I suspect is a half bridge port, it is difficult to start sometimes; especially after refilling the tank. You will have to baby sit it with the throttle while it warms up.
Now for the list of work and mods:
Oil, transmission fluid, diff fluid, and coolant were done in June 2022.
Shifter rebuild kit from Atkins was installed in 2021.
A Holly fuel regulator and pressure gauge have been installed along with new rubber fuel lines and filter.
Aftermarket Weber IDA 48 from Redline Weber has been taken apart and cleaned with new gaskets, float, and orings installed.
Summit racing fuel pump that will do 14 psi easily with no regulation.
Possibly half bridge port 12A judging from the lope, sound, jetting in the carb, and from showing it to other rotary fans.
Racing Beat front cross member along with RB radiator shroud.
E-fan installed with the temp set to 185F.
Red Energy Suspension sway bar bushings
2.75” Vibrant Ultraquiet muffler that is only really loud during acceleration.
Bucket seat for the driver, and original seat for passenger.
Glass panel on the roof can be raised or removed.
Pros:
New belt and alternator. I can reprint the receipt just in case you have issues down the line.
Runs fine on regular gas.
Great fun and it’s a sub 5k RX7 with mods that runs and drives.
People love it at meets.
Downshifts give you backfire
No yearly tab renewals
Glass panel roof is apparently a rare option
Chassis is in great condition
Motor has plenty of life left.
Exedy clutch bites hard
A box of parts including a Racing Beat exhaust shroud and K&N KN56-1210 air filter set.
Cons:
No OMP, so get used to premixing. I will include some.
Around 14 MPG combined, but you’ll be shooting fireballs.
Tiny oil leak that I haven’t tracked down.
Handrake works, but doesn’t lock. I park it in gear.
Tires are very old and are from 2007 I think, they still hold air.
Changed the lug bolts, but the rear driver has one that sheared off when trying to remove it. I currently have a nut welded on it and haven’t had the courage to try again.
I wouldn’t drive it in rush hour traffic, the carb has very little low end torque so it’s not easy to drive in stop and go.
Finicky to start after getting gas, I am not sure whether you have to pump the throttle more. I’ve had trouble where it takes a couple of tries to start.
This is a pretty good summary of the experience.
