Vehicle Description
1981 Honda Civic 5 door (wagon) 5spd manual, 1.5 liter, carbureted
It was just smogged, is registered till May 2021, has a clean title and I have the pink slip.
It has the 1500 engine, which is all original, but is not the one that it came with. I bought this car with a locked up motor at about 110k miles and replaced it with one that had about 80k miles from an 83 Civic sport hatch that was in an accident (having the same engine). The car now has about 130k miles on it, about 100k on the engine.
I swapped out the original auto trans for a sports 5-speed manual from an '80 Civic sport hatch. The manual trans makes it very fun to drive, especially with the rev happy engine.
It runs, looks and drives very good. Clean inside and out. It is in good condition for its age, but does have some spots of rust unfortunately. I have gone through it and replaced a whole slew of parts, from brakes to fuel lines to shocks and much more (see list below). It has been very reliable since getting the US cylinder head done right.
I have invested a lot of blood, sweat and coin into this, but have dropped the price all the way down to $3,195
I will be honest with you and the DMV, so don't bother asking me to lie about the sale price.
If it is listed, I still have it. Email me with your name and number and any questions or call/text me between 9am and 9pm at 8o5 five eight eight 36 74. No habla espanol
Repair, Upgrade and Maintenance List:
2012
-bought the car with a with a locked up engine, having 113,632 miles on it
-bought a running engine pulled from an 1983 sport hatch in an accident with only 81,500 original miles (32k less than this car)
-helped my mechanic do the engine swap, replacing all gaskets, belts and hoses and foolishly installed a rebuilt Jap cylinder head (which I later replaced with the original US model in 2017)
2013
-replaced the head gasket
-had a section of exhaust pipe replaced
-had side and rear windows tinted
2014
-at 114,598 miles I had the original auto trans swapped out for a sports 5spd trans from a 1980 sport hatch (which was overhauled less than 13k miles earlier) along with pedals, gear selector...
-had a digital tachometer installed
-had new power brake booster, speedo cable, clutch kit and c.v. axles installed
-had tie rod ends, control arms, stabilizer bar bushings replaced
-replaced the accelerator cable and a parking brake cable
2015
-had the after-market (Jap) cylinder head completely gone through and repaired
-had a new catalytic converter installed
-replaced the front brake pads
2016
-replaced the voltage regulator and ignition coil
-replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires
2017
-preformed a leak down test and compression test, got very good numbers (like it was new)
-had the stock (USA) cylinder head professionally gone through and rebuilt, then installed with a superior (special order) head gasket from Cometic and replaced all other related gaskets (intake and ex manifolds, EGR, carburetor...)
-replaced the spark plugs, distributor cap and coil wire
-replaced the alternator
-I think I replaced the battery around this point (couldn’t find the receipt)
2018
-replaced rear brake shoes and rear wheel cylinders
-replaced front brake calipers, brake hose lines and flushed the brake fluid
-replaced the fuel filter and many of the fuel lines
-replaced the shocks, struts, mounts, leaf spring bushings
-replaced the clutch cable
-adjusted the cylinder head valves and replaced the valve cover gasket
2019
-replaced the transmission fluid (uses 10/30 motor oil)
-installed after-market stereo and speakers
2020
-had new front tires installed and balanced
-just had smog test, inspection and oil change done
Issues:
It does have spots of rust from sitting for so long at the mechanic shop unmoved (over a year) waiting to do the tranny swap. There are some faded and worn interior parts. The inspection showed a minor oil leak and cracks in the CV boots (both of which my mechanic said were minor issues and not to bother with). The digital tachometer has been zeroing out while driving on occasion recently (maybe just a loose connection).
Extra parts that come free with the car (most are used but good condition):
intake manifold, exhaust manifold, pair of headlights, stock grill, timing belt, fan belts, distributor housing, spark plugs and wire set, distributor cap, tail light assembly, shoulder belts and more
Willing to give with car (under conditions):
the original automatic transmission and all needed to reinstall it: the pedals, speedo cable, tranny cable, axels, flywheel, gear selector and housing. *I just ask that if and when you do the swap, that I get the manual trans, pedals, cables and such.
Willing to sell:
custom made tow-bar and frame mount for it, comes with magnetic light system, folds up and locks in place to be able to drive while still attached, this is great to be able to tow the car behind a motor home
