Vehicle Description
This is a 1985 VW Scirocco 8 valve survivor modified for autocross, but also a decent daily driver that gets 36-39 mpg highway. Engine and transmission are very strong. It has some pro’s and con’s, not surprising given the age and mileage:
The Good:
• Engine was rebuilt in 1999 with 1st oversize 10:1 CR pistons to replace the pathetic 8.5:1 CR pistons that came stock. All rotating parts were precision balanced by Mike Fischer at Competition Engineering in Phoenix. Engine was overhauled in 2014 with new seals and rings after re-honing the cylinder walls. These JH engines have forged cranks and are pretty bulletproof.
• Stock flywheel replaced with a lightened unit. An aftermarket fuel pump relay bumps the cutoff by 500 rpm.
• Solid lifter cylinder head was match-ported and rebuilt with new shorty valve guides and a “G” grind (euro GTI) camshaft. Head is match ported to a Techtonics Tuning (TT) intake manifold. Lots of valve adjustment pucks thrown in with the sale.
• Later style “big bore” throttle body match ported to the intake for improved throttle response. Cruise control functionality has been retained.
• Transmission is the stock close ratio box, rebuilt by Kraftwerks after the original unit shelled out in 2012. I’ve replaced the .89 5th gear set with a .75 ratio for easier cruising on the freeway, which dropped the rpms at 75 mph from 3600 to 3000. These boxes came with a mechanical (not cable) linkage and it shifts great.
• H&R coil-overs all around. I updated the rear springs to a softer rate for better ride around town. Sway bar is stock front and 16V rear.
• The stock brakes were woefully inadequate. So, it has 16V disc brakes on all 4 corners, 10.1” up front and 9.4” in back. The master cylinder was upgraded from the original 20 mm unit to the 16V 22 mm unit.
• Eurospec upper strut bar with a 16V triangulated brace down low.
• Euro bumpers, Kosei 14 X 6 rims (9 lbs. each). Race weight with an empty trunk and jettisoned rear seat is 2150 lbs.
• Dual outlet exhaust manifold connected to a stainless TT dual downpipe and TT 2” exhaust, with CAT, and Flowmaster muffler, fully emissions compliant.
• A period-correct Zender frontspoiler. I bought it when I first got the car and it still looks cool, as does the 16v style roof antenna. The original fender hole was welded shut and finished.
• Interior is surprisingly good, as the dash and door panels were replaced with units from a 1984 California salvage car. 3-gage cluster in the dash with oil pressure, volts, and oil temperature.
• I have lots of spare parts collected over the years, along with key special tools needed to keep this car in tip-top form. They are yours if you want them.
The Bad:
• The car has 339,000 miles (odometer has been replaced twice).
• When the A/C died years ago it and the power steering were deleted to save weight. So this is not a hot weather car. But with manual steering, power steering leaks are a thing of the past.
• I originally bought the car in 1990 with salvage title due to a hit on the front left corner. But the body is straight, as the photos should show.
• Rust: There isn’t much. One hole in the floorpan, and a spot on the hatch.
• The car handles like a go-cart, but can get tiresome on rough roads. I have a complete stock suspension that goes with the car if you want it. It’s a bit floaty for my taste.
• The Tornado Red paint is single stage, so it will require some elbow grease to return the shine. Lots of chips in the frontspoiler, and the driver’s side mirror is pretty faded.
• Speaking of mirrors, the power mirrors don’t work, nor does the rear defrost or the intermittent setting on the front wipers. The rear wiper was deleted when the motor died.
• Tires: The current Sumitomo HTR 200s are near end of life.
The Ugly:
• There isn’t anything ugly about this car. It’s a 1985 VW Scirocco with attitude!
Final notes: Cash only. Please no traders, scammers, unsolicited offers, or tire-kickers. On second thought, tire kickers are welcome as I love to go for test drives and talk about VWs
