Vehicle Description
1997 Chevrolet Suburban 4x4 Overland Solar Camper
Up for sale is a clean title, low mileage 1997 Chevy Suburban 4x4 K1500 that has been converted to a solar powered overland travel & stealth camper. It can carry up to 3 people and can comfortably sleep 2 inside. The second row bench seat is available and can be reinstalled to make the Suburban a 5 passenger SUV.
8th generation Suburbans are very reliable, super easy and inexpensive to work on thanks to their bullet proof small block 350 V8 engine which has been around for decades and parts are plenty and readily available. These engines provide good power to comfortably cruise on highways as well as the ability to tackle moderate off road trails with ease. This particular Suburban runs and drives very well, is in great shape mechanically and all required repairs and maintenance have been performed and are up to date.
Mid to late 90s Chevy Suburban 1500s can be considered economical and can travel almost 600 miles on a single fill up thanks to their massive 42 gallon gas tank while averaging little over 15 miles per gallon. That's not bad for a large SUV and a recreational vehicle.
The 4 wheel drive system is very easy to operate, works great and is paired with a mild 1.5 inch body lift with Edelbrock front and rear coilover shocks and larger 33 inch all terrain tires which allows the Suburban to go off road to some remote and beautiful wilderness for exploration, hunting trips, snow trips and wild camping.
The bed platform folds over the single second row seat and the 4 inch foldable mattress pulls out for two people to comfortably sleep on. Rear window insulation, black mesh sleeves and a curtain separating the driving area from the sleeping area provide excellent privacy.
The Solar panels along with the secondary deep cycle battery provide free electricity to sufficiently power a 42 quart fridge as well as AC and DC outlets for charging and powering cellphones, laptops, lamps, fans and small electrical items. Engine charging is available through a smart isolator which connects the front drive battery to the rear deep cycle battery and enables the Suburban's alternator to charge both batteries during non sunlight driving conditions. The combination of solar and engine charging ensures that there's always sufficient power available to both batteries for starting the rig and powering all the electricals.
The rear kitchen area features a removable sink drawer setup, a large storage drawer with a built in topper and a pullout flat surface platform for prepping, cooking and cleaning needs. A Coleman two burner stove is provided along with a refillable 5 lb propane tank.
This build is very versatile and the Suburban can become a 3 seater SUV, a 2 person camper or an excellent platform for transporting large amounts of cargo. The rear kitchen area can be taken out to open up the rear for an unobstructed view through the rear barn doors.
There is plenty of cargo storage under the platform, in shelves on both sides as well as outside on the roof basket. The Suburban comes equipped with the tow package capable of towing up to 6500 lbs.
