Vehicle Description
The time has come to find a new caretaker for my Discovery. I never thought this day would come but changing life dynamics has now made the once unthinkable necessary.
For your consideration is a genuine 1997 Discovery XD. Yes, the ‘Special Vehicles’ plate is intact in the engine compartment. I am the second owner of this Disco and have owned it for 10 years.
The truck has ~173,000 original miles and still runs great. Overall I’d rate it as a 7 on a scale of 10. There are some issues to be aware of.
The most pressing problem is the ‘A’ pillar and windshield frame. There is rust on the ‘A’ pillar and is the only significant area of visible rust concern. However, I was advised when the windshield was replaced that the windshield frame also has rust and needs attention.
The fasten seatbelt light intermittently comes on.
XD seat covers are worn and sun faded.
Driving lights are Piaa units and not original Land Rover issue.
The ignition is a bit fussy, it usually takes some jiggling to get the key to turn.
No remotes were provided when I bought the truck; I’ve just used the key to unlock and lock all these years.
The rear bumper step needs a replacement strut, it is wired in the up position.
The rear window seal needs to be replaced.
The rear wiper does not work. Do not know if it is the switch or the motor.
There is some wax buildup on the hood and roof. It is starting to come off now and should be carefully compounded out and rewaxed.
The door lock actuators for the rear passenger door and the rear cargo door intermittently do not work; however they can be unlocked manually.
Left front speaker sometimes cuts out when volume is turned down. So far it kicks back in when the volume is raised.
Some positives - a fairly new headliner, a dealer installed sunroof put in by the previous owner, the driver seat has had its webbing replaced, wood trim has been added to the dash and gear shift lever, cold ac, hot heat, rubber floor mats (fronts are not original Land Rover units but are aftermarket custom fit from Rovers North), vehicle has an ~2” lift kit and newer oversized BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 tires, and is mechanically sound.
Registration is due 11/12. I will take care of the emissions test but next years registration will be for the new owner to handle.
Before expressing an interest please be realistic about what this is – it’s a 22 year old Land Rover. Owning a Land Rover brings with it a heady mix of joy and occasional frustration. Your friends will envy it and your partner will hate it. But when you are behind the wheel of this Discovery the world will generally seem like a better place.
My price is $4,500. I might consider offers but only after you’ve looked at the truck to know what you are getting into. Really wanting to find someone with deeper pockets than me who can address the pressing ‘A’ pillar/windshield issue. More importantly I’m looking for someone who is into Rovers and who understands that you just don’t own a Land Rover, you are its caretaker.
Thanks for looking!
