Although they arrived as part of the last gasp of the muscle car era, 1971 and 1972 GTOs have a lot going for them, from potent V-8 engines to distinctive styling and performance. Pontiac advertising claimed that the 1971 455 H.O. was the fastest GTO that the division ever tested, so don't be fooled entirely by those lower compression and horsepower figures. The GTO was always considered a muscle car that could handle, so Pontiac did its best to make sure the 1971-'72 Goat could turn as well as accelerate. The standard GTO suspension includes springs and shocks upgraded from standard A-body Pontiacs in addition to anti-roll bars measuring 1.125 inches in front and 0.875-inch in the rear. The owner added15-inch wheels (vs. 14 originals) in staggered sizes, and 2-inch custom rear springs give the car the proper period Muscle Car stance.1972 GTOs are fairly rare: due to a lengthy strike at GM plants only 5,673 GTO hardtops were made in 1972, no convertibles, and just 134 coupes were made. The '72 455 H.O. GTO marked the end of the Muscle Car era, but many look upon it as the high watermark. The combination of the torque and horsepower of the 455 H.O. places it at the pinnacle of the Muscle Car engines. Note: Even though there were relatively little changes in the engines from 1971, there was a drastic drop in the power ratings of the engine due to a change in the industry standard for measuring the power of the engine.
