This THING defies description. Is it a car, a truck, a buggy; what exactly is this THING? Exactly! The Volkswagen THING dates back to World War Two. The Americans were airlifting the new Jeep into allied territory and the Germans needed their own rugged runabout so they came up with something similar to this THING. Fast forward to 1968 and VW decided to start selling civilian versions of the military THING under the code name Type 181. In Germany it was called the Kurierwagen, in Britain the Trekker, in Mexico the Safari and for who knows why they called it the THING in the USA. Such a silly THING to do, don't you THING? This 1973 THING has been thoroughly refreshed with a handsome new paint job. Some rugged pipe bumpers and rocker guards were custom made for this THING. This THING also got new, top of the line removable side curtains with sliding glass, a very good THING. Wiring issues were cleaned up and all the lights and horn work, even those THINGS that wipe water off the windshield work. By golly the THING even has a bluetooth stereo that sounds pretty good considering the acoustics in the THING are about on par with an empty bean can. Mechanically, the THING's front end has been rebuilt and the brakes have been gone through. The motor in this THING is strong; its an 1835cc unit fed by a new electric fuel pump through a two barrel Weber downdraft carb. This THING even has a performance cam in it. Its rear wheels are driven by a 4-speed bus tranny selected by a short throw Hurst trigger shifter. The THING even got two new CV axles installed. So now, this THING is all tuned up and this THING runs out great. In fact his THING starts right up and idles with a nice lope. It accelerates, steers and stops about as well or better than most THINGS. This THING is fitted with staggered 15" steel wheels, clad with fresh all terrain tires. This THING has an aggressive stance and the performance to back it up. The THING about it though is this THING is not a luxury car. This is a rough and tumble THING. Its bumpy and loud and well, its a very primitive THING. One of the coolest THINGS about a THING is that the top comes off, turning the THING into a four door convertible.
