1954 Kaiser Darrin Sports Roadster

One of only 435 built, this example was number 22 on the production line.

This example has been part of a private collection since 1997. Before that it was based in Florida for many years.

The first production prototype appeared at the New York Auto Show in 1953, just beating the new 1953 Corvette to the Show as America’s first fiberglass production car.

Designed by famed automotive designer, Dutch Darrin, the Kaiser Darrin featured sliding pocket doors, a heart shaped grille and long sweeping lines to the rear. It is powered by a 161 cu. Inch Hurricane F-head engine inline six linked to a three speed manual transmission with overdrive. It was equipped with an independent front suspension- live rear axle and 4 wheel drum brakes.

Since leaving the collection after almost 25 years as a static display, the engine, transmission, fuel system including the tank, were removed to be totally re-conditioned for the road.

The engine was stripped to a bare block and totally rebuilt.The entire brake system was also renewed with all new parts including brake lines. The original “scarlet pincrush vinyl is excellent and replaced as needed on the custions only. A fresh new hartz top has been installed with all new carpeting in the cockpit and the trunk as seen in the attached pictures. The original side curtains and tonneau cover are stored in the trunk. Both chrome bumpers are excellent as well .The engine bay was totally cleaned and refinished so the Darrin would be fresh for show or go. In addition the total wiring harness has been replaced for safety. Even the original heater is in working order. The correct “champagne” paint on the body was so good, it was not disturbed. Luckily, the car was stored in a climate controlled showroom since 1997. Car #22 was such an early car, one can see many different items when studying the car against the later production cars- mainly in the fiberglass construction and support areas.
